Over time your tyres can get worn out, but with some simple care, they can perform optimally for a  long time. Knowing how to look after your tyres can extend their life by years. Let’s look at a few  simple tips:

1. Check tyre pressures every 2-3 weeks

Most tyre damage and wear are a result of driving on tires that are improperly inflated. So, it’s  recommended that you routinely check your tyre pressure. The correct way to do so is to check it  when your tyres are cold. This will give you an accurate reading unlike when the tyres are warm as  that causes pressure to increase.

2. Know your recommended tyre pressure

You can usually find the recommended tire pressure on a sticker inside the driver's door. If there's no  sticker on the door, you can always refer to your car’s manual. Most cars will have a recommended  tyre pressure of 32 psi to 35 psi.

3. Rotate your tyres

Your front tyres often wear out faster than your rear tyres. Rotating tyres involves changing the  position of the tyres on your vehicle. Often this means swapping the front and rear tyres. This will  help to extend the life of your tyres.

Ideally, tyres should be rotated at intervals of 6000 miles

4. Replace tyres when the tread depth is less than 2mm

As your tyres wear by driving on them, the tread wears down. The less tread on your tyres, the  worse your vehicle’s braking performance. In wet conditions, these characteristics are further  worsened.

It’s recommended to replace your tyres if the tread depth dips below 2mm.

5. Don’t overload your car

Regularly overloading your car can cause damage to your tyres over time. It makes them more  susceptible to blowing out, especially if correct tyre pressure isn’t maintained. It also causes your  tread to weaken quicker.

6. Don’t forget the spare tyre

Don’t forget to regularly check your spare tyre as well. Often spare tyres are forgotten and have  been in your car for years. It’s important to check for cracking and wear due to age.

Your spare tyre should be replaced every 5 years as a minimum.
