Do you really need Apple CarPlay or Android Auto?

With so many tempting add-ons to car purchases these days, it can be hard to know which are the must-haves, and which are the must-nots. In this article, we look at the pros and cons of Apple Car and Android Auto. Is this addition to your dashboard really worth it?

If you’re old enough to have lived through a time when having space for a few extra tapes on your dashboard was considered a luxurious add-on, then it’s likely that you’re not taking the most standard of today’s tablet systems for granted.

But here’s the thing. Life really can get a whole lot simpler with the latest and greatest in car tech wizardry.

Wait, what is Apple CarPlay?

Ever been desperate to change the track playing through your phone while driving around, but it’s been too far out of reach? Or perhaps you want to quickly open a message without the hefty fine from the police?

Apple CarPlay allows you to connect your phone’s homepage interface with your car’s dashboard tablet. Once set up, you can navigate towards Spotify, select your favourite podcast app, give your messages a quick check, or take a look at your calendar - all without reaching for your phone.

How much does Apple CarPlay cost?

There’s no monthly subscription fee or upfront cost for Apple CarPlay, however you will pay for any data you use while in your car through your phone data.

If you’re interested in CarPlay, it’s best to check that your new car purchase is compatible. If it is, you can often set up CarPlay through the buttons on your steering wheel or dashboard.

You’ll then need to sync up your iPhone by selecting Settings, then General, then selecting CarPlay. When you choose the option ‘Available Cars’ you should be able to choose your car. This will sync your car with your new ride.

So, what’s Android Auto?

Much like Apple CarPlay, Android Auto allows you to see your phone’s home screen on your car dashboard - using the apps you know and love with ease while you take to the driver’s seat.

The difference between Apple CarPlay and Android Auto isn’t all that much at all. Choosing between the two really comes down to ensuring you are using the system that matches your phone. If you have an iPhone, you’ll need Apple CarPlay. And if you’re an Android user, you guessed it, it’s Android Auto for you.

If you’ve been taken away with the idea of being able to drive with a seamless connection between your car and your phone, you’re not alone. Your next step? Finding a car that’s compatible.

Luckily, CARS24 is the home to a fleet of cars that’ll have you driving, listening, calling and organising your life without reaching for your phone. It’s safe, it’s seamless, and now it’s time to make it yours.
