Audi A8 summary

The huge and powerful Audi A8 has a straight lineage that dates to the full-size Audi V8 car from the late 1980s. The V8's sales performance was underwhelming, prompting Audi to create a new design from the ground up for its next foray into the full-size sector. The decision was made to invest heavily in the new car, resulting in the development of a slew of advanced technologies and material sciences. The first-generation Audi A8 was revolutionary in terms of aesthetics, design, and construction, and it was the first production car to include a totally aluminium monocoque chassis as well as extensive use of the lightweight metal in the body.

The production A8 debuted a year later in 1994, with a 3.7-liter V-8 and front-wheel drive, and went on sale in the United States in 1997. The second-generation Audi A8 was introduced in 2002 for the 2004 model year, featuring a new soft-edged exterior and a slew of Audi's halo technology. Built on a modified version of the ubiquitous Volkswagen MLB platform, the third-generation Audi A8 debuted in the United States for the 2011 model year, putting it in line with the rest of the then-updated Audi lineup and sharing similar interior structure and design. The fourth-generation and current Audi A8 arrived for the 2019 model year after nearly a decade of development. Of course, the new A8 is loaded with the newest Audi technology.

The 2021 Audi A8 is available in three well-equipped trim levels, each with a different powertrain option: 55 TFSI, 60 TFSI, and 60 TFSI e. The 3.0-liter V6 engine (335 horsepower, 369 lb-ft) in the 55 TFSI is linked to an eight-speed automated transmission and all-wheel drive. For 2021, Audi has added more standard features to the model from the previous year. The V6 is replaced by a turbocharged 4.0-liter V8 (453 horsepower, 487 lb-ft) in the 60 TFSI. The standard amenities are the same as the 55 TFSI, with the exception of a Bang & Olufsen audio system, which is an optional feature on the 55 TFSI. A turbocharged V6 plug-in hybrid powers the 60 TFSI e. (443 hp, 516 lb-ft). The options are the same as on the 60 TFSI.

Audi A8 PRO’s & CON’s

  • Things We Like
  • Things we don’t like

Audi A8 gets a lot of praise for the simplicity of its design. It’s better than the Mercedes Benz S class in this regard.

Whatever A8 model you choose, you can be sure you’ll have enough power.

The car has the technology to make your ride as comfortable as possible. The advanced electromechanical adaptive suspension independently controls each of the four wheels to supply unparalleled ride comfort and improved handling—and the system can even raise one side of the car before a side-impact event.

The 490-litre boot space that can hold large luggage easily.

The cabin is impeccably crafted.

Audi is known for doing a good job when it comes to dashboard styling, but the high-tech A8 does have some areas which are a let-down.

The car has great features but it doesn't seem as polished as its German rivals, Mercedes-Benz S-Class or BMW 7 Series. The powertrains, infotainment and ride quality aren't quite the same.

The car comes across as a little bit numb and clumsy in some aspects. The brakes are jumpy in traffic, making it hard to stop smoothly. The transmission is also slow to downshift whenever needed.

The ride quality can feel decidedly unrefined on slightly rough roads.

The climate control has to do more than it should have to in a car of this status and there is more road and engine noise.

The car only comes in the petrol option.

The experts have driven this car and tested it out extensively. The Audi A8 delivers what’s expected from a luxury car, with impeccable refinement, loads of creature comforts, the finest materials and trims and a cushy, air-suspended ride that isolates you from the world outside. Performance is not exciting but is suitably brisk for a car of this type. Safety wise, the car includes all safety features from anti-lock brake system to hill and crash assistant. The Audi A8 strives to mix Audi's tech-forward heritage and high-end luxury appointments with a touch of sport into a long-wheelbase executive express.
