Previously, it was predicted that the 2018 Ford Aspire will hit the markets in the second half of 2018. However, Ford has now released an official statement that the launch of this much awaited compact sedan will take place on the 4th of October. As for the pricing, the previous Aspire before discontinuation had a starting price of Rs.5.82 lakhs and went all the way up to Rs.8.77 lakhs for the top model. Although no official word has been released by Ford regarding the pricing yet, it is expected that the car will get a price hike as a virtue of the various new components it packs. The new 2018 Ford Aspire is expected to have a starting price of Rs.5.95 lakhs and will go all the way up to 9 lakhs for the fully loaded top model.
The previous Aspire came in a total of 3 engine variants, 2 Petrol variants (1.2-litre and 1.5-litre) and a Diesel variant (1.5 litres). For the new 2018 Ford Aspire, it is expected that the previous 1.2-litre and 1.5-litre, 4-cylinder petrol engines will be replaced by the newer Dragon series counterparts as seen on the Freestyle CUV and the new EcoSport. The new engines will displace the same capacity but will have different cylinder orientations comprising of 3 cylinders instead. The 1.5-litre diesel will be carried over as it is.
|Cylinder Configuration||3-Cylinders/4-Cylinders||4 cylinders|
|Max Power||96bhp at 6500RPM/123bhp at 6500RPM||100bhp at 3750RPM|
|Max Torque||120Nm at 4250RPM/150Nm at 4500RPM||205Nm at 1750-3250RPM|
The transmission options on all three variants will be new as well. The 1.5-litre variants will come with a manual as well as automatic options. New lighter and slicker-shifting Getrag units will take the place of the existing manual gearbox on both engine options. It is going to be a 5-speed transmission just like the previous one. As for the automatic variant, the previous 6-speed DCT will make for a more cost-effective 6-speed torque converter transmission.
The previous Ford Aspire wasn’t particularly known for its fuel economy. The reason behind this was the sub-par low-end performance of the older engines. This meant the engine had to be revved a lot to stay in the powerband which directly affected the fuel efficiency of the motor. The newer engines, however, aren’t plagued by that problem. For the petrol variants of the new 2018 Ford Aspire, you can expect a mileage of 22 kmpl and 20 kmpl from the 1.2 and 1.5-litre variants respectively. The Diesel engine will be putting out around 20-23 kmpl.
Dimensionally, the new 2018 Aspire will be the same as the previous. There are no differences here as the car is based on the same chassis and platform as the previous generation.
|Ground Clearance||174 mm|
Despite not clicking too well in the market, the previous Ford Aspire was generously packed with equipment and several segment first features. The equipment levels on it were very comparable to some C-segment sedans as well which explains the slightly premium pricing. The new 2018 Ford Aspire will continue on those lines along with a host of new features as well like:
The previous Ford Aspire wasn’t exactly very successful due to various reasons. The car is actually a very capable 4-wheeler which is quite extensively packed with equipment and various segment-first features. The major aspect that bogged it down was the disappointing low-end performance. This caused a lot of impact on the fuel economy which deterred a lot of people from buying it.
Now with the brand new Dragon series engines and the new transmission options, we expect that the mileage and power delivery issues should be fixed. Adding to that the interiors also get a contemporary overhaul where the brand new 6.5-inch infotainment screen steals the limelight. The exterior of the new 2018 Ford Aspire also sports some subtle changes which certainly add to its appeal. We are confident that the new car should do well. Now, all it boils down to is how well Ford is able to price the car.
