The BMW 3 Series is probably the Bavarian carmaker’s most iconic sedan. Since its inception in 1975, the 3 series has had a very well-established reputation worldwide. When it was launched in India in its 5th Generation avatar in 2006, it simply blew away the competition from Mercedes-Benz by a huge margin. However, the current 6th Generation model (launched in 2012) is struggling in front of the more recently updated Mercedes-Benz C-Class and the Audi A4. To tackle this problem, the 7th Generation 2019 BMW 3 Series was created. It was showcased in the Paris Motor Show held in October as their trump card for the year.
In this article, we will take a closer look at this brand BMW car and find out what all it has to offer in front of the competition. So without any further delay let’s start with our detailed overview of the new BMW 3 Series features.
Bigger Yet Lighter: The 2019 BMW 3 Series is a much bigger car from every dimensional aspect. It is 1.5 cm wider, 7.6 cm longer and 1.2 cm taller which gives it more interior room. Despite the increased dimensions, the new car is now actually lighter in weight by 55 kilograms. BMW has managed to achieve this feat by incorporating the use of high-strength steel and aluminum in selective chassis members.
Sharper Looks: In terms of appearance, the 2019 BMW 3 Series now closely resembles its elder sibling, the 5 Series. In fact, it won’t be too wrong to say that it actually looks better than the 5 Series. The traditional BMW elements are very much intact but also get some new styling elements. The “kidney style” grille and the dual barrel headlamps remain. The most distinct element on the car has to be the sharp character lines that very neatly protrude into the headlamp cluster. The lower air dam is also redesigned as is the fog lamp cluster which is now identical to the one on the 5 Series. The rear section of the car is also thoroughly redesigned with a brand new LED taillight cluster and really sporty dual exhausts.
Improved Aerodynamics: All the redesigned bodywork on the new 2019 BMW 3 Series isn’t there just for the sake of better appearance. The new components have contributed significantly to reducing the overall drag coefficient of the car. The new BMW 3 Series now has a reduced drag-coefficient of 0.23 Cd from the previous generation’s 0.26 Cd. This helps the car cut through air smoothly, thus improving the performance, mileage and handling all at the same time.

Redesigned Contemporary Interiors: The biggest changes with the new 2019 BMW 3 Series are visible in the car’s interiors. The all-new Black and Silver interior theme is as modern as it gets and is surely going to give its competitors a run for its money.
BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant: AI is rapidly evolving every-where and BMW has made full utilization of the same. The 2019 BMW 3 Series comes equipped with an Intelligent Personal Assistant that listens to the verbal commands of the driver and makes changes accordingly. The system also picks up the user’s habits and automatically makes those changes as and when required. For example, if the driver has a habit of turning on the AC after a particular time interval, the system picks up on that habit and will do so automatically after some time.
BMW Live Cockpit: The new BMW 3 Series comes with a brand new Live Cockpit module. This module comprises of a 12.3-inch all new LCD instrument cluster and a 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment unit with Apple CarPlay integration. Also present is a 20GB hard-drive-based multimedia system. Strangely enough, Android Auto has been omitted. The display unit’s layout can also be modified as per the driver preferences.
Loaded To The Brim: Apart from the above-mentioned highlights, the interior of the new BMW 3 Series is packed to the brim with equipment. It consists of Customizable Ambient Lights, Light Carpet Road Illumination, Acoustic Glass Windscreen, Digital Phone-Based Entry Key, Reversing Assistant and a Parallel Parking Assistant to name a few.
Same Capacity More Torque: Powering the 2019 BMW 3 Series is a familiar 2.0-litre inline-4 as seen on the existing model. However, the new engine puts out 3 more bhp and a stonking 50 more Nm of torque. This increase in output was achieved with the incorporation of a brand new direct injection system, improvised heat management, a lightweight crankshaft and an updated ECU software management system.
Power Packed M-Series Variants: Along with the standard variant, the new 3 Series will also come with a performance packed M-series model, the M340i. This variant will get the Z4 coupe’s turbocharged straight-six engine putting out a whopping 382 bhp and 500 Nm of torque. It will also come with an M-Performance Tuned Chassis, a full variable locking M-Sport differential and a BMW xDrive all-wheel-drive system. All these components propel the M340i from 0-100 in a mere 4.3 seconds!
State of the Art 8-Speed ZF Automatic Transmission: Both the M-Series as well as the standard 2019 3 Series models will come with an ultra-modern 8-speed ZF Automatic Transmission. This transmission unit also comes with shift predictability program. The program monitors the car’s route based on the GPS and plans the gear shifts beforehand based on that. Hence, when you have to tackle uphill terrain or turns, the transmission is already prepared beforehand
Adaptive M Suspension: The highlight of the 2019 BMW 3 Series Electronics package is the intelligent adaptive M Suspension system. It intelligently adapts to the user’s driving pattern and makes necessary changes to the damping automatically. Coupled with the M Sport package, you can also adjust the suspension damping manually between different preloaded profiles.
Comprehensive Driver Assistance Systems: The new BMW 3 Series comes with an assortment of Electronic Driver Aids. The intricate components of this system are Adaptive Cruise Control with Stop and Go Function, Lane Departure Warning, Lane Change Warning and Forward Collision Warning Integrated with Automatic Emergency Braking. All these systems work in unison with each other for the best results.
Standard Safety Package: The existing basic safety features that the previous 3 Series was incorporated with will also be making it on to the new version. It consists of 6 airbags, a TPMS (Tyre Pressure Monitoring System), Corner Brake Control, Dynamic Stability Control, Dynamic Traction Control and ABS with EBD as always.
The brand new improved 3 Series is expected to hit the American showrooms in March 2019. The Indian launch can be expected within a month of its American debut. Pricing-wise it is will start at $40,200 which is slightly lesser than the previous generation. Hence you can expect the 2019 model to also bear the similar Rs.42 lakh price tag as the existing variant. With these thorough updates, the new 3 Series now has enough juice to compete with its more modern competitors. We certainly expect it to fare well in once launched as it very well has the potential to overshadow its rivals. Stay tuned to our blog for further updates regarding the 2019 BMW 3 Series.
