2020 Kia Sonet Records 50,000 Bookings in Just Two Months

Kia India only recently launched the all-new 2020 Sonet crossover in September, though bookings have been open since August 20. In just a matter of two months, the 2020 Kia Sonet has already recorded 50,000 bookings! Such unprecedented numbers, especially considering the times we live in right now, are some real eye-openers. While the auto industry is still reeling through the turmoil of an ever-changing landscape cause by Covid-19, some brands are clearly doing better than others. The Kia Sonet is the South Korean automaker’s latest model in India, and within 12 days of launch, over 9,200 units had already reached their respective owners. Such stellar sales performance is the key behind the constant influx of soft-roaders that we are currently seeing the world over. According to Kia, the Indian-made Sonet will be exported to around 80 countries.

In the brand’s line-up, the Kia Sonet sits below the larger and more expensive Seltos, with prices starting from Rs 6.71 lakhs (ex-showroom). However, do note that this is the introductory price for the Sonet, and that will be bumped up later on. Overall, the 2020 Kia Sonet is available in six different trims – the base trim being the HTE. The Sonet HTK trim starts from Rs 7.59 lakh, HTK trim from Rs 8.45 lakh, the mid-spec HTX from Rs 9.99 lakh, HTX+ from Rs 11.65 lakh, and the top-end GTX+ is priced at Rs 11.99 lakh. As far as its design is concerned, the Kia Sonet amalgamates boxiness and curves pretty well. Its urbane design theme may not adhere too well with those who like their crossovers all boxy, but the Sonet’s exterior styling leaves little room for complaint.

Kia’s well-liked ‘Tiger Nose’ front grille makes its appearance in the Sonet as well, and it will sure catch stray eyeballs. The front styling blends neatly with the sleek headlamps, buff-looking contoured hood, and carved bumper with its silver skid plate finish. With its peculiar wheel arch cutouts, flared fenders, and dual-tone alloy wheels, the side profile looks upscale without going over the top. The rear features LED tail lamps and a well-garnished bumper with faux dual tailpipes and an air diffuser. The Kia Sonet is 3,995mm long, 1,790mm wide, and 1,642mm tall in terms of its dimensions. It has a wheelbase measuring 2,500mm, whilst boot space stands at 392 liters. Some of the colors available for the Sonet include Intense Red, Gravity Gray, Glacier White Pearl, Steel Silver, and Aurora Black Pearl.

The interior of the 2020 Kia Sonet can be had with one of several color combinations. These include a mono-tone all-black scheme, dual-tone Glacier white Pearl with Aurora Black Pearl, or Intense Red with Aurora Black Pearl. The cabin design of the new Sonet looks unarguably smart and is convincingly upmarket. The instrument cluster has this intriguing half digital-half analogue theme to it, while the flat-bottom steering wheel feels expensive and chunky to hold. The vertically-arranged air vents look unique, and so do the buttons for the HVAC system. Meanwhile, the 10.25-inch UVO touch-infotainment system sports a wide-aspect ratio display, which is crisp and bright. The seats in the Sonet feel plush and won’t be a bother even on longer journeys, while the head & knee room is decent. Kia has been nailing build quality for a while now, and the same story continues in the Sonet as well.

If you are prepared to pay for the higher trims, the 2020 Kia Sonet will please you for sure. Its primary equipment list consists of automatic LED headlamps, power sunroof, cruise control, automatic climate control, ventilated front seats, auto-dimming rearview mirror, LED mood lighting, wireless charger, multiple drive modes, and even smartwatch connectivity. The Sonet also has your back with its extensive safety nannies. Some of these come in the form of 6 airbags, Electronic Stability Control (ESC), Hill Assist Control (HAC), and Vehicle Stability Management (VSM). Of course, there is also an Anti-Locking Braking System (ABS) with Electronic Brake-Force Distribution (EBD), front & rear parking sensors, Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS), and child-seat ISOFIX anchor points.

The Kia Sonet is offered with three engine options; one diesel and two petrol variants. If outright oomph is what you desire, then the 1.5-liter four-cylinder diesel mill won’t disappoint. It serves up 99hp with 240Nm if paired to the 6-speed manual gearbox. But if you go for the 6-speed automatic version, power figures go up – now you have 113hp and 250Nm of torque to play with. On the other hand, the 1.2-liter naturally-aspirated petrol engine has the least grunt; it only makes 82hp from its four cylinders. Kia’s 1.0-liter turbo-petrol has the most horsepower at 118hp. It is also the only engine option on the Sonet that can be had with a 7-speed dual-clutch gearbox. The 2020 Kia Sonet finds rivals in the Hyundai Venue, Ford EcoSport, Toyota Urban Cruiser, Tata Nexon, and the yet-to-be-launched Nissan Magnite.
