Mercedes-Benz is arguably the undisputed king of all luxury automakers in India, and it has been for a while. In an era where crossover this and SUV that is all the craze, the Three-Pointed Star continues to sell a respectable number of sedans in the country. Joining with much verve and vigor is the all-new 2021 A-Class sedan (‘Limousine’ in Mercedes’ parlance). The Mercedes-Benz A-Class Limousine has entered the compact luxury sedan segment, going head-to-head with the new BMW 2-Series Gran Coupe. With a starting price tag of Rs 39.90 Lakh (ex-showroom, India), the A-Class Limousine is available in three variants.
Commenting on the launch of the Mercedes-Benz A-Class Limousine in India was the brand’s Managing Director & CEO, Martin Schwenk. He stated,
“We are glad to introduce the highly anticipated A-Class Limousine to the Indian market. The A-Class Limousine imbibes all that is core to a Mercedes-Benz product and promises the new generation, Indian customers a car that is ‘just like them’. With the A-Class Limo, we are offering today’s young and successful luxury car customers a very stylish and sporty car that is very comfortable, highly tech-laden, extremely practical in addition to a hassle-free ownership experience driven by an industry first 8 years warranty on engine and transmission. We are confident the A-Class Limo will set a new benchmark in the segment and attract a lot of new customers to the Three-Pointed Star.”
The new A-Class Limousine range in India starts with the entry-level A200 petrol. Under the hood, it comes with a 1.3-liter four-cylinder turbo-petrol engine that makes 161hp and 250Nm of torque. Then there is the A200d, which is priced from Rs 40.90 Lakh (ex-showroom, India). This one gets a 2.0-liter four-cylinder turbo-diesel motor that puts out 148hp and 320Nm of maximum torque.
Finally, there is the exciting AMG A35 4MATIC, pegged at Rs 56.24 Lakh (ex-showroom, India). While it is a baby AMG, it still comes with a feisty 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine that cranks out 302hp and 400Nm. However, do note that the standard A-Class sedan in India is sold exclusively in its range-topping Progressive Line trim.
To enable the car to put its power down properly, the AMG A35 gets Mercedes’ 4MATIC all-wheel-drive system as standard. It also comes with a tweaked 7-speed dual-clutch transmission that has been tuned for quicker gear shifts. Meanwhile, the entry-level A200 also features a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox, though it doesn’t get the 4MATIC all-wheel-drive system.
As for the A200d, its turbo-diesel engine comes paired with an 8-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox. In terms of their acceleration, the A200 and A200d are pretty evenly matched. Both can hit 100 kmph from a standstill in around 8.3 seconds. Obviously, the AMG A35 easily outclasses both those variants, with its 0 to 100 kmph dash taking just 4.8 seconds.
The standard 2021 Mercedes-Benz A-Class Limousine variants are offered in six exterior shades – Polar White, Mojave Silver, Mountain Grey, Cosmos Black, Denim Blue, and Iridium Silver. Meanwhile, the AMG 35 4MATIC can be ordered in an exclusive Sun Yellow color.
The AMG 35 further gets a few other niceties, including sportier 18-inch AMG alloy wheels and Multibeam LED headlamps. These are complemented by a twin-slatted AMG front grille, AMG front bumper with a splitter, and more pronounced air intakes. Meanwhile, the rear features rounded exhaust tips with chrome embellishments, a sportier-looking bumper, and a boot-lip spoiler. Compared to the standard A200 and A200d variants, the AMG treatment on the A35 certainly ups the ante.
Meanwhile, the interior of the AMG A35 4MATIC looks just as eye-catching as its exterior. It boasts stylish sports seats that get red stitching for more contrast and visual excitement. Similarly, the flat-bottom steering wheel is wrapped in premium nappa leather. The AMG A35’s kitty tags along with a 12-speaker Burmester sound system, adaptive AMG suspension, and Active Park Assist.
Mercedes has also given the performance-oriented version of the new A-Class Limousine dual digital widescreen displays. Among the two, the 10.25-inch high-definition touchscreen in the center runs the marque’s MBUX infotainment system. The updated MBUX package brings Android Auto & Apple CarPlay, Mercedes me connect & app integration, Amazon Alexa, and Google Home Integration. Its connected car tech makes the 2021 A-Class Limousine an up-to-date offering from Mercedes-Benz.
