Let’s be honest. The lockdown has put a serious hamper on all our movements. A tough time for die-hard car enthusiasts, with tempting empty roads with barely any traffic but it is very necessary for us to stay home for the sake of humanity. The only thing better than driving is to watch someone else drive. These days a large majority of people are hooked to Netflix and Amazon Prime, amirite?
In order to quench our thirst for the fast-paced world of cars and simultaneously enjoy the lockdown, here are a few series focusing on cars that are pretty close to the real deal! We might not be able to go out in cars ourselves (as we shouldn’t; stay safe everyone!) but we sure as hell can enjoy the thrill of speed and the adrenaline rush from the comfort of our couch!
The series is an in-depth analysis of modern-day corporate corruption and fraud. The infamous Volkswagen Emission Scandal lies at the heart of the episode at hand of Netlix’s brilliant show. A documentary, it follows the in-depth investigation into “DeiselGate” as it is called, or the scandal that shook the world. The opening theme of “Lie, Cheat, Steal” is a sneaky little addition that rides the overall theme of the series. A treat for all auto junkies, it spills the truth on how VWs blue-diesel technology was hailed as a brilliant endeavour until it all fell apart after the truth was disclosed. It charts how it began and then its repercussions at the global level, to how VW had to ultimately pay billions of dollars to the US government in damages.
Netflix’s next super popular show is a documentary following Christian von Koenigsegg’s quest to create the ‘hypercar‘. The Swedish entrepreneur’s desire to be an enigma in the world of motorsport is reflected as he tries to build a mega car that may as well transcend the existing idea of power and velocity in hypercars. I like to call it a revolution on four wheels and you’ll see why as you watch this show. The documentary is super fascinating in the way it showcases and brings to the public the nitty-gritty of how these marvels are built. From conceptualization to the final product, the show is a wonderful depictor of fine automotive engineering, peppered in with the advice from what are perhaps the largest automakers in the world!
Inarguably one of the finest pieces of automotive television, this documentary is a peek into the world of Formula One racing. Co-produced by Netflix and Formula One, it offers an exclusive look into the behind-the-scenes of the 2018 and 2019 world championships. Racing at 360kmph, changing four tyres of a car in less than 2 seconds, driver rivalries, and crazy crashes that will surely make your heart skip a beat! The binge-watch worthy show has “unparalleled and exclusive access to the world’s fastest drivers, team principals, and owners, as well as Formula 1’s own management team”. The dynamics between the teams, clever juxtaposition of information and entertainment as well as the thrill of the championship make it a remarkable watch.
Comedians and Cars are the power couple you just never saw coming! As the pretty self-explanatory title suggests, the web series about comedians in cars, well, getting coffee. With Jerry Seinfeld as its host, the show has been around for 11 seasons and has seen the likes of famous comedians including but not limited to Ellen DeGeneres, Larry David, Seth Meyers, Sarah Silverman, Tina Fey, Aziz Ansari, Julia Louis-Dreyfus (YES THE SEINFELD MINI REUNION), John Mulaney, Hasan Minhaj, Jim Carrey, and even Barrack Obama! Talk of a star-studded lineup! It follows the conversation between the guest and the host as they get caffeinated and talk of a particular vintage car model chosen by Seinfeld himself. Perfect to satiate the car lover in you who wouldn’t mind a few laughs!
Amazon Prime’s Grand Prix Driver follows McLarens’ journey, it offers a peek into the world of Formula One racing. Narrated by Michael Douglas (mhmm dreamy), the series throws light on the inner workings of the F1 team and its strategies and ways of working for the 2017 championship. The series features Fernando Alonso, considered one of the greatest drivers of all times, despite just two World Championships under his belt. It is heavily insightful for F1 lovers and leaves you wanting more at the end of the four episodes. A must watch!
The Emmy nominated show by Amazon Prime is a highly acclaimed series that charts the ups and downs of racing in the World Rallycross Championship. The unscripted documentary follows the life and work of Ken Block, the famed entrepreneur and motorsports star. It talks of the making of Gymkhana 10 and offers an exclusive look into the making and filming of the films. Rife with all of the struggles and hard work of creating the renowned series, it also provides a peek of all the behind-the-scenes from the previous films, including untold stories and never seen before footage!
We hope these amazing car-based online series will keep the boredom away during the lockdown and things will get better eventually, a day we are all waiting for, to pull our car out of the garage and hear the engines roar to glory.
