MG Motor has been enjoying a relatively high amount of success in the Indian market. Its models like the Hector and ZS EV have been big hits in their respective segments, bringing the brand a lot more customers into its fold. However, the automaker has been working on a new model for India, that in most probability, will be called the MG Astor. It hasn’t been too long since MG trademarked the Astor name in our market, so this car is definitely coming. If things go without any hiccups, the Astor should be launched around Diwali this year.
While there is a good chance that the upcoming Astor might be the latest iteration of the outgoing ZS, it will not be an EV. Under the hood, the MG Astor will use a regular internal combustion engine for power. In most likelihood, MG should be making the Astor available with two petrol powerplants. One will be a naturally-aspirated 1.5-liter four-cylinder unit with around 104hp and 141Nm of torque, the other could be a 1.3-liter turbocharged four-banger with 160hp and 230Nm of torque.
MG will mostly introduce the Astor with at least a couple of gearbox options, including a CVT and a 5-speed manual. However, a 6-speed torque converter automatic might also make it to our market. On the exterior, the upcoming MG Astor will sport sleek headlamps with angular LED DRLs, a wide front grille with chrome detailing, and a sporty bumper with stylish fog lamp inserts and a silver skid plate. There will also be large LED taillights, a deep rear bumper with decorative trim inserts, and fake tailpipe surrounds. Having said all that, the Astor will not look too different from the latest avatar of the MG ZS petrol.
MG is likely to load the Astor will quite a lot of features on the inside. It should get a panoramic sunroof, automatic climate control, an electrically-adjustable driver’s seat, a leather-wrapped multifunction steering wheel, cruise control, leather seat upholstery, and a 10.1-inch touch-infotainment system with Android Auto & Apple CarPlay.
Meanwhile, the Astor’s equipment list could see the inclusion of MG’s Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS) for added safety. Furthermore, the Astor will also get dual front airbags, ABS with EBD, Hill Start Assist, Electronic Stability Control, and parking sensors with a rearview camera.
