BMW 2-series Gran Coupe to Launch on October 15

Right now, the BMW 3-Series is the smallest sedan you can buy from the stables of BMW in India. Internationally, however, buyers can pick even the smaller 2-series Gran Coupe, a sporty sedan based on the 1-series. However, high price tag and small size don’t go hand-in-hand in India and hence, most luxury carmakers have so far preferred not to launch such vehicles in India. In fact, most of them have already burnt their fingers by launching expensive hatchbacks. For instance, the BMW 1-series hatchback that was launched in India hardly found any takers and had to be pulled off the shelves due to the dismal sales performance. Now, however, BMW India is ready to launch its second entry-level offering, this time around, in the form of the BMW 2-series Gran Coupe that would still below the 3-series sedan in the company’s local lineup.

The BMW 2-Series Gran Coupe made its debut in the last quarter of 2019 and was launched in a handful of international markets earlier this year. The entry-level Bimmer will now launch in India on October 15 and the company has also commenced the marketing campaign for the new model in Malaysia, where the new car will go on sale shortly after it launches in India. It must be noted here that the 2-series Gran Coupe is not based on the 2-series Coupe. Instead, it’s a derivative of the 1-series hatchback, and the styling and the underpinnings stay the same as that of the donor model, except, of course, for the rear-section, where the new model gets a decidedly more flamboyant coupe-ish roofline and tail section.

The BMW 2-series will be even available with an all-wheel-drive system that will be offered through the costlier xDrive variants. Internationally, the small car is on sale in multiple variants, including 218i and M235i. The former gets its power from a 1.5-litre, turbocharged, inline-3 petrol engine, with a maximum power and torque rating of 140 PS and 220 Nm, respectively. On the other hand, the latter is powered by a 2.0-litre, turbocharged, inline-4 petrol engine that outputs 306 PS and 450 Nm. The only transmission on offer will be an 8-speed automatic unit.

In India, the BMW 2-series Gran Coupe will cost roughly Rs 33 lakh to Rs 38 lakh, which will make it a tad cheaper than the BMW 3-series. In India, the new model won’t face any direct competition except for the Mercedes CLA-class, which has been slotted below the C-class. Just like the 2-series Gran Coupe is based on the 1-series hatchback, the CLA-class is based on the A-class hatchback.
