Diesel Car Ban
NGT bans all old diesel cars (10+ years). Here is what you need to know:

Diesel Car Ban

The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has finally imposed a ban on all, 10 years or older, diesel vehicles in Delhi effective immediately. Diesel cars over 15 years were already banned in the capital. This comes after the controversial ban on diesel vehicles over 2000cc in Delhi and 5 other states. The NGT plans on extending the ban gradually across cities with 15 on its list. The Delhi RTO has been directed by the NGT to de-register all diesel vehicles which are older than 10 years in Delhi-NCR. Also, it has been asked to share a list of these vehicles to the Delhi Traffic Police. RTO’s would start issuing NOCs to owners so they can sell their car in other cities.

To Diesel OR Not To Diesel

Amidst the narrowing difference in diesel and petrol prices post the lift of subsidies last year, this comes as bad news for both manufacturers and consumers. Demand for diesel vehicles is sure to take a hit since cars older than 7-8 years will have few takers. Consumers have favored diesel cars over petrol because of the better mileage and power they offer. They would now have to sleep on their decision of buying a new diesel mill pertaining to the shortened life cycle due to the imposed ban. On the other hand, manufacturers will have to focus more on the production of petrol variants. While manufacturers like Mahindra have worked around the ban of 2000cc diesel mills by re-engineering their existing mHawk diesel engine used on the XUV 500 and the Scorpio to 1999cc, consumers don’t have such clever tricks up their sleeve.  This decision is bound to affect the car prices in the second-hand market.

How Would This Help?

The tribunal stating that the residents in Delhi-NCR deserve better as pollution is touching alarming levels in the region has taken a strong stand on the ban and is determined to ensure compliance across NCR. Diesel cars account for almost a third of the cars in the region and are major contributors to the ever-rising pollution problem. But the question remains – Is this enough to curb the rising levels of pollution in the capital? We sure await answers to see if the compromise is worth it. While the turbulence continues to perplex manufacturers and consumers alike, there isn’t any time to waste as your old diesel car is losing value every day.
