Back when Ford was facing a near-humiliating traumatic event in the world of motorsports, trying to beat Ferrari at the legendary 24 Hours of Le Mans, Lee Iaccoca, an American automobile executive decided to forge something that would ignite the American muscle car era and go down in the history as one of the best selling sports car ever!
Today, Ford Mustang is celebrating its 56th anniversary, the same as my Dad. A piece of heritage for American motoring history, Mustang has proven itself time and time again. Ford Mustang has been the best selling sports in America for 50 years in its 56 years of existence. With the world shifting from gas guzzlers to clean energy for future cars, an all electric-Mustang Mach-E SUV is probably going to drive its legacy forward.
The iconic Ford Mustangs became what came to be known as the ‘Pony Car’ segment with its long hood and short deck. Coupled with a classic marketing strategy of attracting the young blood, Ford dominated in this car segment. Chevy and Pontiac did all they could to wrap a halter around this Mustang but little did they know that it had amassed a cult following of its own.
But what seemed to be a ‘Precious Gem’ for Ford, faced tough times too, in its journey to becoming the best selling sports car. The third and fourth generation Mustangs were disliked by most, mainly due to the aesthetics aspect of the pony. This was the time Mustangs dwindled with poor sales and uncalled mechanical failures but this was soon recovered with the arrival of the 5th generation.
What seemed to be a golden era for Ford Mustangs is the 6th generation. Introduced in 2015, Ford Mustang was the best-selling sports car in the world. Fast forward 5 years, it is still selling like hotcakes, even in Germany. Winning the best-selling car for the past 5 years, Ford still pats its shoulders for exporting its wild horse to almost every continent.
This is not a piece of mere news but a homage to one of the most good-looking, crackling, oversteered pieces of machinery ever built after the Curtiss P-40 Warhawk.
