Traffic Rules and Regulations in Gurgaon

Like all states in the country, Haryana has certain rules and laws that have to be adhered to by everyone driving in the state and its cities. In Gurgaon, the rules and regulations are set by the Traffic Police Department. If anyone is caught breaking any of these laws, they will be punished accordingly. Here are some of the traffic rules and laws in Gurgaon that have to be followed:

Mandatory Seatbelts

Anyone who drives a vehicle in Gurugram is expected to wear a seatbelt while driving. If anyone is caught without a seatbelt, a fine of ₹100 will be levied for a first-time offender whereas ₹300 will be penalised for a subsequent offence.

Valid Number Plates

The registration number plates of any vehicle in Gurugram should follow the specifications of the Police department. Anyone who is caught with a fancy number plate will be fined. The specified font for number plates is Arabic and no other font can be used.

Tinted Windows Rules

According to the Central Motor Vehicle Rule of 1989, the windscreen window and the rear window should have a minimum of 70% visibility and the side windows are required to have a visibility of a minimum of 50%. Any vehicle not complying with these rules will be fined heavily.

No Drinking and Driving

Drivers caught driving under the influence of alcohol shall be punished by the Gurugram Traffic Police. The Motor Vehicle Act of 1988 states that a first-time offender shall be fined ₹2,000 and/or imprisonment for up to 6 months. For any subsequent offence, the fine will be increased to ₹3,000 and the imprisonment shall also be extended to up to 2 years.

No Using a Mobile Phone

The Gurugram Traffic Police are extremely strict when it comes to a driver using a mobile phone while driving a vehicle. The penalty for the offence is often a fine of ₹100 – ₹500, but if the offender is caught causing harm to others while using a phone and driving, the penalty is more severe and could include imprisonment.

Effective Surveillance

We have already talked about how Gurgaon has been attracting millions of people for career opportunities. More people in the city means more vehicles on the road and that in turn, leads to more congestion, and a lot more traffic. Working along with some of the biggest names in the corporate sector, the Gurugram Police have installed thousands of CCTV cameras across the city at strategic points to catch anyone who breaks the law. These cameras are also used to penalise the offenders and are monitored 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. With the help of these CCTV cameras, the congestion in Gurugram has significantly been reduced.
