India To House World’s Highest Tunnel Connecting Himachal And Ladakh

In what is major news, the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) announced that it shall be constructing the world’s highest tunnel! The tunnel will be at Shinku La Pass at an altitude of 16,580ft. The tunnel will connect Himachal Pradesh to the Union Territory of Ladakh.

The tunnel’s construction will begin in July 2022 and will be operational by 2025. It is said that it will rival and possibly surpass the highest tunnels in China and Peru, both of which arent over 16,000 ft., and it will help to reduce the travel time from Manali to Zanskar Valley. Currently, one has to travel more than 100km from Manali to Darcha before turning towards Shinku La Pass and entering Zanskar Valley. This tunnel shall reduce the travel time significantly.

The BRO’s director, Lieutenant General Rajeev Chaudhary, announced on Sunday that the tunnel would begin construction by mid-2022. On Sunday, the director spoke at the opening of the strategically important road between Himachal and Zanskar Valley at Shinku La Pass. He also said that to oversee the project, the BRO has put forth a special team called ‘Project Yojak.’ The BRO handles building and maintaining roads across the northern regions of India.

This is not the first record-breaking project the BRO has undertaken. The Atal Tunnel, the world’s longest highway tunnel above 10,000 ft., opened in 2020 and lies on the Leh-Manali Highway. In February 2022, the BRO received an award from the World Book Of Records for building the tunnel. The BRO also previously built the highest motorable road, Umling La, in eastern Ladakh at 19,300ft.
