Indian Government Opts for Electric SUV, Hyundai Kona over Indian Manufactured EVs

In a first of its kind, the Central Government has chosen a Korean car manufacturer Hyundai motors over Indian manufacturer’s such a Mahindra and Tata Motors to buy official cars. In a move to promote the growth of electric cars in India, the Government has placed orders for the only long-range electric car on sale, the Hyundai Kona which was chosen by Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL).

The Kona was chosen over the Tata Tigor EV and Mahindra e-Verito, as they were issues faced earlier with their respective offerings stated EESL. The Kona offer’s the highest range, around 452 km on a single charge as specified by ARAI (Automotive Research Authority of India). The Kona comes with a 134hp permanent-magnet synchronous electric motor powered by 39.3 kWh lithium-ion polymer battery which produces an impressive torque of 394.9 Nm. The motor power’s the front wheels of the Hyundai Kona which accelerates from 0-100 kmph in under 10 secs.

The Hyundai dealerships selling the Kona have a charging infrastructure with a 7.2 kW AC charger installed for customers. In addition to it, top cities such as Bangalore, Mumbai, Delhi, and Chennai have a Kona Electric fleet equipped with a special power converter to provide charging during an emergency. Hyundai has also collaborated with MapMyIndia to integrate the EV charging stations on their maps.

The Kona comes with safety airbags for the driver, the passenger and also side air-bags. Apart from this, the car is loaded with features to enhance the driving experience such as stability control, brake assist, hill assist, ABS, and traction control.

Hyundai has joined hands with IOCL to develop charging stations at select outlets in select cities. Hyundai will invest in fast chargers which can charge 80 percent battery in less than an hour.

At CARS24 we believe it is a great move by the Government to enhance the use of electric cars in India but the charging infrastructure is something that needs to be in place before the masses catch up on the trend.
