Based on the same platform as the Kia Seltos, the Kia Carens will be rivaling the Maruti Ertiga, XL6, and Mahindra Marazzo when it launches next year
The Indian subsidiary of Kia, the renowned South Korean carmaker, has finally officially confirmed the name of its upcoming MPV. Dubbed Carens, the new model is being promoted as a Recreational Vehicle (RV), which, as per the carmaker, is based on the concept of Car+Renaissance. The Kia Carens will become the second MPV in its manufacturer’s lineup and will be positioned between the Sonet and the Seltos.
The technical specifications of the Kia Carens are yet to be revealed. However, what’s a given is platform sharing between the new model and the Seltos. Also, the Carens could borrow the 1.5-litre engine options from the C-SUV, which means it will be launched with 1.5-litre naturally-aspirated petrol and turbocharged Diesel engine options. Both the motors will be offered with manual and automatic transmission choices.
As per the carmaker, the Carens will be a family-oriented premium vehicle that will come replete with high-end features while its cabin will offer high practicality. It will also offer bold, SUV-inspired styling with the carmaker’s signature styling elements. The Kia Carens will be a made-in-India product that will be exported to other markets. It will be produced at the state-of-the-art manufacturing facility of Kia India at Anantapur, Andhra Pradesh. The new model will make its world debut on 16 December and will be launched in the market in the first quarter of next year.
In all likelihood, the Kia Carens will be positioned below the Seltos in its carmaker’s product portfolio. This means prices could start around Rs 9 lakh and go all the way to Rs 14 lakh for the top-end model. At this price positioning, the new MPV will rival everything from a Maruti Ertiga and XL6 to a Mahindra Marazzo.
Speaking on the announcement of the name of the new product, Tae-Jin Park, Managing Director and CEO, Kia India, said, “We are really excited to bring our fourth product for the Indian market, the Kia Carens. Kia wants to offer a premium and comfortable family RV that has a three-row seating configuration and features fitting in perfectly with India’s urban lifestyle and road conditions. We are confident that the Kia Carens will prove to be a game-changer, and it is all set to shake up a few segments.”
