Last week, the Kia Sonet, which used to be among the most highly anticipated models of recent times, was launched in the country at a starting price of Rs 6.71 lakh (ex-showroom, pan-India) for the entry-level HTE trim. The new model has been launched in multiple variants and is on sale in two styling trims – Tech Line and GT Line. All in all, the Kia Sonet is on sale in as many as 15 variants, has three engine options and multiple transmission choices. However, the company is yet to reveal the prices of the Kia Sonet GTX+ 7 DCT and diesel AT variants. Still, our sources have informed us that the costs of these two models will be revealed to the masses by the end of September 2020, which means these two models could officially launch in the coming week as we’re approaching the month-end.

As we said, the Kia Sonet has gone on sale in India with as many as three engine options – 1.2-litre naturally aspirated petrol, 1.0-litre turbocharged petrol and 1.5-litre turbocharged diesel. The base petrol motor, which is the 1.2-litre unit, offers a maximum power of 82 bhp and a peak torque of 115 Nm. On the other hand, the more powerful, turbo-petrol, engine goes on to offer 118 bhp and 172 Nm. While the less powerful petrol engine is only available with a 5-speed manual transmission, the more powerful variant offers two transmission choices – 6-speed iMT and 7-speed DCT.

The diesel engine is kitted out with a 1.5-litre oil-burner that is available in two states of tune. The less powerful one is a 100 PS-240 Nm version with Fixed Geometry Turbo. It comes mated to a 6-speed manual transmission. The more powerful version has a Variable Geometry Turbo and offers 115 PS-250 Nm. It comes paired with a 6-speed torque-converter automatic option.
The Kia Sonet is available with several segment-best features, which makes it a pretty lucrative option. Highlights of the features of the top-spec GTX+ trim include a 10.25-inch infotainment system, UVO connectivity suite, 4.2-inch colour instrument cluster, ventilated front seats, tyre pressure management system, sound-mood lighting system, BOSE sound system, air purification system with Virus Protect feature, wireless charging pad, electric sunroof, etc.
While India is the first market for the company’s first-ever sub-4-metre SUV, the new model is slated to go on sale even in many international markets. In India, the Kia Sonet goes on to lock horns with the Maruti Vitara Brezza, Hyundai Venue, Mahindra XUV300, Tata Nexon and Ford EcoSport.
