Slated to debut on August 7, the Kia Sonet will become the most affordable offering in the carmaker’s portfolio. As we’ve already reported a few times, the production version of the Sonet will look much like its concept model, which is something that is often hinted at by the numerous spy images we have seen so far. However, a new image that has leaked online gives us a clear look at the car’s front-end. This image was taken while the TVC of the new model was being shot.
As can be seen in the image we have above, the production version of the Kia Sonet looks a lot like the concept model we saw at the Auto Expo 2020. Its front-end features a similarly bold ‘Tiger-nose’ grille while the headlamps look slightly bigger and less sophisticated. The bumper also looks quite bold with some crisp creases and a silver-finished faux skid plate.
The side profile will have dual-tone diamond-cut alloy wheels. The model seen in the image above seems to be the GT Line version, which means the other versions will look a tad less sporty. However, elements like a rising beltline, chrome trim on the C-pillar, and plastic cladding on the wheel arches and the lower body remain standard across the lineup. The rear-end of the vehicle will feature wraparound taillamps that will be connected through a reflector-strip, while the bumper will hold another faux skid plate. Also, the car will feature a roof-mounted spoiler and a shark fin antennae.
Overall, the Kia Sonet will surely look bolder than the Hyundai Venue. We bring the comparison with the Venue here as the two models will be mechanical twins. The Sonet will share its architecture with the Hyundai sub-compact SUV and will even offer the same engine options. What this means is that the new model will be available with two petrol motors and a diesel engine. The base petrol engine will be a 1.2-litre unit, while the top-spec motor will be the company’s 1.0-litre T-GDI turbocharged mill. The oil-burner on offer will displace 1.5-litre.
Transmission option for the base petrol motor will be that of a 5-speed manual unit, while the diesel motor will come mated to a 6-speed manual transmission. The 1.0-litre T-GDI though, will be offered with a 6-speed iMT (Intelligent Manual Transmission) and a 7-speed DCT. On-road performance should be very similar to that of the Venue but the distinct aesthetics will surely help the Sonet carve out a niche for itself in the market. Bookings will be open on August 7.
