Land Rover Defender Diesel Launched In India, Prices Start at Rs 94.36 Lakh

The all-new generation of the Land Rover Defender reached Indian soil back in October 2020. And up until now, the new Defender was only available in its petrol guise. However, we now have the D300 variant of the SUV in India, which gets a 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder turbo-diesel engine. As with its petrol-powered counterparts, the Defender diesel is also available in the 90 (three-door) and 110 (five-door) avatars. Defender customers will get to choose from four separate trim levels – SE, HSE, X-Dynamic HSE, and X. However, the latter trim is only offered on the Defender diesel.

Prices start at Rs 94.36 Lakh for the base SE trim in the Defender 90, rising all the way to Rs 1.08 Crore for the top-spec X trim. Note that these are their respective ex-showroom prices. Compared to their petrol-powered P300 variants, the D300 variants cost between Rs 10.42 Lakh and Rs 14.46 Lakh more. Even if you have the money, that is a pretty sizeable sum between the Defender petrol and diesel versions. The Land Rover Defender diesel, in its D300 avatar, comes with a turbocharged six-cylinder engine that pumps out 296hp and 650Nm of torque. Equipped with an 8-speed automatic gearbox and Land Rover’s Terrain Response 2 all-wheel-drive system, the Defender diesel isn’t a slouch.

In fact, forward progress is quite rapid for a vehicle that weighs more than 2.2 tons. Land Rover says that the three-door Defender diesel will hit 100 kmph in 6.7 seconds, with the five-door achieving the same in 7 seconds. In comparison, the petrol-powered Defender takes over a second longer to hit 100 kmph from a standstill. While the Defender diesel is heavier than its petrol counterpart, the 250Nm of extra torque sure comes in handy. Interestingly, the top speed for both petrol and diesel variants of the Defender is the same, at 191 kmph.

Equipment on offer in the Defender diesel is identical to what you get with the petrol variants. Land Rover has loaded the new Defender with tons of passive and active safety features. Some of the highlights include surround-view cameras, adaptive cruise control, Driver Attention Monitor, Blind Spot Monitor, and Rear Cross Traffic Alert. On top of these, you will also get 6 airbags, Corner Braking Control, Electronic Stability Program, and Traction Control System.

Meanwhile, the Defender’s comfort features comprise of heated & cooled front seats, tri-zone automatic climate control, power-operated & heated door mirrors, a 12.3-inch digital driver’s display, and a 10-inch touch-infotainment head unit with Apple CarPlay & Android Auto.

In India, the Land Rover Defender diesel sees competition from the Jeep Wrangler, though that doesn’t get a diesel powerplant. In effect, the Defender diesel, in immediate price bracket, doesn’t really have much in the way of rivals. On the other hand, its higher cost means that the Defender diesel won’t be suitable for everyone. Unless you really want that extra torque and you do lots of highway miles, the petrol-powered Defender will do the job just fine.
