The new-gen Mahindra Thar was originally scheduled to go on sale in the Indian market in the first quarter of the current fiscal. However, the health crisis that gripped the entire world, along with the resultant economic implications, led to a delay in the introduction of the new vehicle. While it was being said that the new model would now launch by August 2020, it now looks like one of the most awaited Mahindra cars of recent times won’t be here anytime before the year-end.

Recently, Veejay Nakra, Mahindra & Mahindra’s Chief Executive Officer has commented that it would take at least a month and a half more for the supply constraints to be removed. He said, “We are struggling to manage supplies to ramp up capacity to meet the strong anticipated demand mainly from the rural markets and the footfall at the showrooms has reached 40% and the enquiries at almost 75% compared to the regular times before the last three or four months. We expect the rural scenes and vehicle subscription options to drive sales over the next four months”.

Compared to the earlier model, the next generation Mahindra Thar will be brimming with several upmarket features. The equipment on offer will include bits like a touchscreen infotainment unit with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto support, reverse camera with rear parking sensors, air conditioning, steering-mounted audio controls and electrically-adjustable outside rearview mirrors. Also, it is worth a mention here that the second-gen Mahindra Thar will go on sale with an option of a factory-fitted hard-top, ABS with EBD, dual front airbags and front-facing rear seats. All these things should make the SUV a lot more sophisticated than the bare-bones first-gen model.

2020 Mahindra Thar will be powered by new petrol and diesel engines, which means it will be the first-ever iteration of the Thar to go on sale with a petrol engine option. The gasoline option on offer will be a 2.0-litre turbocharged unit that was showcased at the Auto Expo 2020 head earlier this year. The oil-burner option will be a revised version of the 2.2-litre motor that powered the earlier Thar. Transmission duties for both the motors should include a 6-speed manual and an Aisin-sourced 6-speed torque convertor automatic unit. 4×4 will be offered as an optional extra on both the engine variants.

Underpinning the next generation Mahindra Thar will be a modified version of the ZEN3 ladder-frame chassis that underpins the current generation Scorpio as well as the TUV300. Also, the suspension system of the new-gen Thar will be totally new and should lead to better dynamics than what the previous version offered.
