The BMW 2-Series Gran Coupe was only just launched in India in October. And already, it has got a special edition to go alongside. Called the Black Shadow Edition, this dark-themed version of the standard 2-Series Gran Coupe is priced at Rs 42.30 lakh (ex-showroom). Only 24 units of the Black Shadow Edition will be made available for the whole country, starting December 7. Interested customers will have to head to the BMW online shop to make the actual purchase. Based on the 220d M Sport variant, BMW has given the special edition a few added niceties.
All 24 of the special edition cars will come with BMW’s ‘Individual’ option plus a high-gloss shadow line package and ‘M’ Performance parts as standard. If you were to buy these optional extras with a standard 2-Series Gran Coupe, they would cost you Rs 2.5 lakh. Meanwhile, the price difference between the 220d M Sport and Black Shadow Edition is only Rs 90,000. Just like its regular sibling, the Black Shadow Edition will roll-out of BMW’s facility in Chennai.
The 2-Series Gran Coupe Black Shadow Edition will only be sold in two exterior colors, Alpine White and Black Sapphire. A dual-tone Sensatec Oyster will contrast these, and Black themed interior. The Black Shadow Edition further gets a glossy black mesh-style front grille, glossy black wing mirrors, plus ‘M’ Performance 18-inch wheels that are finished in matte black. Interestingly, these wheels come with the Rolls-Royce inspired weighted logo at the center, which remains upright at all times. Finally, the Black Shadow Edition is also fitted with black exhaust tips and a glossy black ‘M’ Performance rear spoiler.
The cabin of the Black Shadow Edition of the 2-Series Gran Coupe is pretty much identical to the standard car. It is still loaded with features, especially since this special version is based on the range-topping M Sport trim. This means you get things like a 12.3-inch digital driver’s display and a 10.25-inch central touchscreen with BMW’s Gesture Control, Virtual Assistant, 3D navigation, and wireless Apple CarPlay. Frustratingly, the system still does not support Android Auto. However, the Bavarian automaker might bring it in an update in the near future. Other nifty features in this cabin include a wireless charger, panoramic sunroof, dual-zone climate control, ambient LED mood lighting, Sport seats with electrical adjustment, split-folding rear seats, and a 10-speaker premium audio system.
BMW has made zilch changes under the hood, meaning the Black Shadow Edition gets the same engine as the standard 2-Series Gran Coupe. It is a twin-scroll 2.0-liter four-cylinder diesel engine that makes 190hp and 400Nm and comes mated to an 8-speed automatic gearbox. The front-wheel-drive 2-Series Gran Coupe can get from 0-100 kmph in less than 7.5 seconds, while the top speed is 233 kmph. Despite being a front-wheel-drive platform, this baby Bimmer still gets Launch Control, paddle shifters, and drive modes. To ensure safety, there are parking sensors with a reversing camera, Dynamic Stability Control (DSC), Dynamic Traction Control (DTC), Cornering Brake Control (CBC), Electronic Differential Lock Control (EDLC), and 6 airbags.
The BMW 2-Series Gran Coupe Black Shadow Edition is for those select folks who want a special 2-Series. With just a couple of dozen of them for the whole of India, this will likely remain a rare sight. Then again, with its price (at the high-end) inching so close to the even better and more exciting 3-Series, it is all on you. You could either buy this stylish Black Shadow Edition if standing out is what is more important for you, or you could just stretch that little extra and get the larger 3-Series.
