The Maruti Baleno is one of the most popular hatchbacks in the country. The premium hatchback, which belongs to the B2 segment of the market, is so popular among the new car buyers that its popularity far exceeds that of some much cheaper cars, including the likes of Maruti Celerio, Tata Tiago, and Renault Kwid. There are too many great things about the most premium hatchback from Maruti Suzuki. Right from its interior to some segment-leading specifications and mileage, the Baleno car features great equipment level and other hardware. Let’s review the Maruti Baleno features on offer –
The Maruti Baleno is quite a stunner. True, it doesn’t look as unique anymore as it did when it was first launched a few years ago, but this is only because we have got so used to seeing the Baleno dotting the streets. When seen analytically, by someone who has a knack for good designs, the Baleno passes the litmus test with flying colours. Its exterior looks very sophisticated, while the pulled-back headlamps and the large angular grille gives it the signature Suzuki look.
The highlight of the front-end has to be the stylish headlamps that are somewhat similar in design to the Maruti Swift. These units carry a Bi-Xenon setup each, which means you get clear illumination in the dark. This is one feature that is generally available only on cars that cost several times more. It’s heartening to see this feature making it a well-priced car like the Baleno. Another feature of the front-end is the set of foglamps, which improves the illumination. In the side profile, the Baleno car features stylish alloy wheels in a grey finish. The Baleno RS, however, gets black-finished alloy wheels. The sports variant also gets a very sporty body kit that enhances the overall appeal of the exterior. At the rear, the car receives LED tail lamps, a rear wash wipe, and a roof spoiler.
If you think that the Maruti Baleno looks really sophisticated and upmarket on the outside, you sure need to check out the interior. On the inside, the Maruti Baleno car features premium seat covers, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, a TFT colour Multi-information Display, a touchscreen infotainment unit that supports Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, Steering-mounted audio controls, and automatic climate control, and optional leather seat covers.
While the features list of the Maruti Baleno doesn’t have rear AC vents, it’s important to mention here that the car has a very powerful AC that takes almost no time to cool the entire cabin. The interior can easily seat five people in reasonable comfort, and the great ride quality will keep them comfortable over rough roads. Other features on offer include electrically adjustable outside rear view mirrors, rear shelf parcel tray, central locking with remote, push-button start with keyless entry, and chrome accents on the door levers.
The Maruti Baleno car features three engine options – 1.2-litre petrol, 1.3-litre diesel, and 1.0-litre turbo-petrol. The turbocharged petrol version is available only on the top-end trim. For most usage conditions, the base petrol engine suffices. For those who have high usage, the diesel engine makes more sense as it offers a higher mileage and decent power and torque figures. The 1.0-litre turbocharged engine-equipped RS version is for all those who want a sporty car with stylish looks and higher mileage.
The 1.2-litre petrol engine is a smooth and refined motor that is available with two transmission options – a 5-speed manual and a CVT. Those who want a convenient yet powerful car to drive can pick up the automatic version. Others will love the good torque spread and the low NVH levels of the 1.2-litre petrol engine, which outputs 85 PS and 115 Nm. The diesel engine offers 75 PS and 190 Nm. The most powerful engine on offer, the 1.0-litre Boosterjet turbo motor, not only offers a much higher power output but is also high on refinement. It produces 102 PS and 150 Nm, which makes it one of the most powerful cars in its class.
Almost all Maruti Suzuki cars deliver a high mileage, and the Baleno is no different. In spite of being a premium offering, it delivers mileage figures that can put some much cheaper and less powerful cars to shame. The high mileage figures are owing to the well-tuned engines and transmissions and the low kerb weight. The latter is due to the HEARTECT architecture, which is a lightweight platform that is high on strength and robustness.
The diesel version of the Baleno delivers a mileage of 27.39 kmpl, which makes it one of the most fuel-efficient cars on sale in the entire country. Even the petrol version isn’t far behind and offers 21.4 kmpl. It is not as good as the diesel version but is still better than all other petrol-powered cars in this segment. The turbocharged petrol engine is a bit of a surprise. In spite of having great power figures, it delivers 21.1 kmpl, which is only slightly lesser than what the base petrol engine offers.
In spite of being an affordable hatchback, the Maruti Baleno offers the kind of space that one expects from some sedans. It offers very good legroom at both front and rear. It has an overall width of 1,745 mm, which translates into a sufficiently wide cabin that is spacious enough to easily accommodate three adults on the rear seat. Not only this, the premium hatchback offers a large boot, which measures, 339-litres. To put things in perspective, the latest generation Maruti Dzire has a boot space of 378-litres, which is only slightly more. Furthermore, the wide loading lip makes for easy loading of large luggage. The only complaint we have here is with the high loading lip.
By going through our review of the premium hatchback, it is quite easy to see that the Maruti Baleno features stand at par with what the competition offers. Moreover, the Baleno car features some equipment that is available only on the costlier models.
