Suzuki launched the Jimny many moons ago, and it is one of the Japanese brand’s most popular and well-loved SUVs. Late last year, there were rumors that the automaker was bringing the Jimny to India sometime between 2021 and 2022. However, the outgoing model is currently only available as a 3-door, which is sold in just a select few markets. Despite that, the demand for the Jimny wasn’t going cold. So much so, in fact, the automaker contracted its Indian arm Maruti to help it build more units for export purposes.
However, none of the Jimnys being built in India were meant for our market. But it wasn’t long before speculations were adrift about Maruti Suzuki working an angle to introduce the SUV in India. Having said that, the chances of the marque launching the standard 3-door model here is next to negligible. This is down to the fact that, despite its legendary off-roading prowess, the Suzuki Jimny isn’t the most practical SUV. If the automaker wants to introduce it to the Indian market, it will mostly do so by launching a 5-door version. And while the 3-door model is still very popular, it will be the 5-door Jimny that will be reaching markets such as India.
Given how manufacturers love India’s tax benefits for cars under 4 meters in length, the upcoming 5-door Jimny will fit this bill well. Even after being stretched, the overall length of the Jimny will be under that magic figure. Surprisingly, unlike other subcompact SUVs on sale in the country right now, the 5-door Jimny sports a 2,550mm wheelbase – more than any other vehicle in its class. Naturally, this should open up more space for passengers on the inside, especially when compared to the outgoing 3-door model. Since we don’t have any official photos from Suzuki, we will have to wait to see proof of that.

As for the overall design, the Japanese automaker is unlikely to change anything when compared to the 3-door version. Of course, there will be an extra set of doors to allow rear-seat passengers to step onboard, but that should be about it on the outside. Meanwhile, much of the interior of the Maruti Suzuki Jimny 5-door will also be carried over from the 3-door model. Depending on the trim level, the features on the India-spec Jimny could include LED headlamps, keyless entry, power windows, cruise control, automatic climate control, a leather-wrapped multifunction steering wheel, and a 7-inch touch-infotainment system with Apple CarPlay & Android Auto.
Suzuki will likely be introducing the Jimny in some markets with a new 1.4-liter turbo-petrol engine from the new Swift Sport. However, this motor is unlikely to make it to our shores anytime soon. On the other hand, the India-spec Jimny 5-door will mostly be equipped with a 1.5-liter naturally-aspirated four-cylinder petrol engine. Found on the outgoing 3-door model, this unit develops 101hp and 130Nm of torque and comes as standard with a 5-speed manual. However, a 4-speed automatic transmission is also available in some markets. Needless to say, the Jimny 5-door will come with a proper four-wheel-drive system, though a lower-priced two-wheel-drive version might also be on offer. As for the launch itself, Maruti Suzuki could bring in the 5-door Jimny either by late 2021 or early 2022.
