Mahindra & Mahindra, the homegrown UV specialist, has finally revealed the second-generation Mahindra Thar. Furthermore, it has even stated that the new-generation Mahindra Thar will launch on October 2. The carmaker has said that the new model is a “quantum leap in terms of technology, comfort and safety features” without letting go of any of its thoroughbred off-road capabilities. Hence, as we have been saying, the new Mahindra Thar is a more comfort-oriented and premium vehicle than its earlier iteration.

The equipment list of the new SUV will include stuff like an IP-54-rated water-resistant 17.8 cm touchscreen infotainment system, cruise control, adventure statistics display and roof-mounted speakers among others. Also water-resistant is the multi-function steering wheel and the centrally-located window switches. Powering the 2020 Mahindra Thar will be petrol and diesel engines. What this means is that the new-gen Thar could have a much higher appeal than the current version as many car-owners are fast switching to petrol-powered vehicles. The petrol engine on offer will be a 2.0-litre mStallion T-GDI petrol engine, while the oil-burner will be a 2.2-litre mHawk diesel unit. The petrol engine outputs 150bhp and 320 Nm, while the diesel motor offers 130bhp and 300 Nm. Transmission duties will be handled by a 6-speed manual and 6-speed torque-converter automatic units. The SUV will also offer a manual shift-on-the-fly 4×4 transfer case. Also, it must be noted here that switching from 4-High to 4-low mode increases the torque by 2.48 times. Also, front-axle disconnect system, braking locking differential on both axles and a mechanical locking rear differential are standard.
There are two options for the rims and tires. The standard version includes 16-inch wheels with 245/75 R16 tyres, while one can even opt for 18-inch wheels with 255/65 R18 tyres. The SUV offers 226mm of ground clearance, 41.8-degree approach angle, 36.8-degree departure angle and 27-degree break-over angles. The SUV also has a 650 mm water-wading capacity.
