After the introduction of the AMG C 63 Coupe and the 2020 AMG GT R in India, Mercedes-Benz, the renowned German luxury car marque, is now ready to launch yet another new model in the fast-growing local luxury car market. Mercedes-Benz India will launch the 2020 Mercedes Benz GLS later this month.. The news of the imminent launch of the new GLS-Class comes from none other than Martin Schwenk, Managing Director and CEO, Mercedes Benz India Ltd. The new-gen model of the company’s biggest SUV will be brought to India via CKD (Completely Knocked Down) route and the new model will be assembled at the company’s Chakan-based facility in Pune. In fact, the kits for the 2020 Mercedes-Benz GLS are already in India.
The new generation 2020 Mercedes-Benz GLS, which is the latest flagship SUV in the carmaker’s lineup, will be launched in India on June 17. As we said, the news of the local launch of the new model comes from Martin Schwenk, Managing Director and CEO, Mercedes-Benz India Ltd, who revealed the launch date along with a couple of image teasers of the soon-to-be-launched SUV on social media. Akin to the earlier generation GLS, the new SUV will be brought to India via CKD route and will be assembled at the company’s Chakan-based facility off Pune. It is expected that the 2020 Mercedes-Benz GLS will launch in India with a base price of more than Rs 1 crore, which means it will become the most expensive SUV from the carmaker in the country.

In terms of aesthetics, the 2020 Mercedes-Benz GLS Class carries a very bold octagonal grille that is flanked by Multibeam LED headlamps. The headlights carry a total of 112 LEDs each, while the Daytime Running Lights is divided into three segments. Other than this, the SUV also carries chrome-plated under-guard in the front fascia along with larger airdam and a revised hood that features two power bulges. At the rear, the new Mercedes-Benz GLS gets two-piece LED taillamps with a three-dimensional pattern, simple-looking rear bumper with underbody cladding, silver skid plate, and dual exhaust mufflers with adorned with chrome bezels. The 2020 Mercedes-Benz GLS is bigger in dimensions than its predecessor, with the new model measuring 77 mm more in length, 22 mm more in width and 60 mm more in terms of wheelbase.
Like we just said, the new Mercedes-Benz GLS is bigger in dimensions than its previous iteration. To be specific, the new model measures 5130 mm in length, 1934 mm in width and 1850 mm in height. It comes with a wheelbase of 3075 mm. This makes the GLS the largest SUV the renowned German luxury carmaker has ever built.
Of course, like we just said, with an overall length of more than 5 metre, the new GLS is the biggest monocoque-bodied SUV that has even worn the coveted tri-pointed arrow badge. Other than the increase in the dimensions, the overall design also helps the GLS have a higher street presence. The SUV has an upright stance, which immediately help its have a high street presence.
Also, with a significant increase in the dimensions, especially in the wheelbase, the SUV is now roomier than its predecessor. Like we mentioned earlier, the new GLS is 77 mm longer, 22 mm wider and has a 60 mm longer wheelbase than before and this has helped the car benefit from more cabin space, especially for the second-row passengers. Also, for the first time ever, the GLS will feature a 6-seater option with two luxury individual seats for the second row. The dashboard carries a large single-screen unit with touchscreen interface and split screens for the infotainment unit and instrument cluster. The 2020 Mercedes-Benz GLS Class SUV also benefits from the company’s latest-generation MBUX system that comes with a rear-seat entertainment package comprising two 11.6-inch displays for watching movies, playing music and surfing internet. The new SUV also benefits from the manufacturer’s driver assistance system, heated seats, and 5-zone climate control.
While official details of the engine options for the new Mercedes-Benz GLS aren’t known at the moment, it’s expected that the new model will launch here with both petrol and diesel engine options. The petrol motor on offer will be a V8 unit, while the diesel engine will be an in-line 6-cylinder motor. The latter will be dubbed GLS 400d and will output 330 bhp of maximum power and 700 Nm of peak torque. The details of the petrol option will be made available only at the time of the launch. Both the engine options will be available with 4MATIC all-wheel-drive system, along with the AIRMATIC air suspension system with Adaptive Damping System Plus fitted as standard.
Rightfully called the S-Class of SUVs, the GLS-Class from Mercedes Benz has always offered an amalgamation of outright luxury and ruggedness. The new-gen model will be no different in this aspect. Also, with a starting price of roughly Rs 1 crore, the new model won’t come cheap. Internationally, the new model will go on to rival a range of well-established vehicles, including the Range Rover, BMW X7, Audi Q8 and, to some extent, even the Tesla Model X.
