Launched back in 2020, the Toyota Urban Cruiser has been quite a popular model for the Japanese brand in India. While it is basically a Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza, the Toyota badge makes all the difference. Usually, Toyota vehicles are infamous for their reliability, though that doesn’t mean they are all perfect. Case in point, it seems like there could be a slight hiccup for about 9,498 owners of the Urban Cruiser. This is because these vehicles, manufactured between July 28, 2020, and February 11, 2021, have a possible issue with their driver-side airbag modules.
As you can imagine, that could lead to a mishap somewhere down the road. Since this concerns safety, Toyota will recall all of the affected units and fix them at no cost to owners. If your Urban Cruiser was built between the above-mentioned time period, you will soon be contacted by an authorized Toyota service center. Even though the Urban Cruiser and the Vitara Brezza are pretty much identical twins, Maruti Suzuki hasn’t yet mentioned any similar issue with the Brezza.
To help identify it as a Toyota, the Urban Cruiser has a few exterior styling changes over the Vitara Brezza. For instance, the front fascia of the Urban Cruiser sports a reprofiled grille with two chrome bars on either side. This makes the nose resemble other Toyota SUVs such as the Fortuner, which is a good sign of brand identity. Similarly, the automaker has redesigned the front bumper, so it now looks more aggressive and gets large fog lamps as well. Apart from this, the only other modifications come from the different fake skid plates at the front and rear.
The Toyota Urban Cruiser’s interior gets a leather-wrapped multifunction steering wheel, push-button start, automatic climate control, and a 7.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Android Auto & Apple CarPlay. On the safety front, there is ABS with EBD and Brake Assist, ISOFIX anchor points, Hill Hold Control, dual front airbags, and rear parking sensors with a rearview camera. The Urban Cruiser is powered by a 1.5-liter naturally-aspirated four-cylinder petrol engine that makes 103hp and 138Nm of torque. Customers can choose between a 4-speed automatic or a 5-speed manual gearbox. Toyota has priced the Urban Cruiser from Rs 8.50 Lakh to Rs 11.35 Lakh (ex-showroom, India).
