Kia, Hyundai Motor Group-owned premium carmaker, entered the local car market last year with quite a bang. The company’s maiden offering, the Seltos, has already helped the carmaker become one of the largest-selling carmakers in the country. At Auto Expo 2020, Kia Motors India, the local subsidiary of the carmaker, launched the Carnival, a premium MPV positioned above the Toyota Innova Crysta. However, the sales volumes for an expensive vehicle like the Carnival are too low to help any carmaker improve its market share.

Kia, however, isn’t the one to give up so soon and is now preparing to launch another SUV that will help it post even better sales numbers. Soon, the company will launch the production version of the Kia Sonet concept that was showcased at the Auto Expo 2020. The Sonet has already been teased a few times and will make its debut on August 7. Ahead of its official unveiling, the manufacturer has released a few official sketches of the upcoming model that give us a good look at what the production model would look like.

One thing that’s clear from looking at these images is that the production version of the Kia Sonet won’t look too different from the rather radical concept showcased at the Auto Expo 2020. The front-end features a similarly high-set hood and the company’s signature Tiger Nose grille that is flanked by a sleek pair of LED headlamps with LED DRLs. Also, like the concept, the front bumper is rather sporty and carries a silver-finished faux skid-pate. Moving to the side profile, the production model features a toned-down version of the set of alloy wheels seen on the concept model. That said, the wheels look quite trendy and are sure to attract many.
Furthermore, the side profile also features a rising beltline and a plastic trim for the C-pilar that gives a ‘wraparound’ look to the rear windscreen. Also, in order to maintain the SUV credentials, the SUV features dual-tone roof rails and black plastic cladding on the wheel arches and the side skirts. The rear features a roof spoiler, a reflective strip that connects the LED taillamps and a chunky bumper.
A couple of sketches also reveal the interior design of the Kia Sonet. The interior looks quite upmarket and gets a unibody panel that houses the all-digital instrument cluster and the large-screen (10.25-inch) infotainment unit. This is similar to what we get on the Kia Seltos. The car also features the same steering wheel and the same gearknob. The dashboard features rectangular AC vents with filleted edges.
The Kia Sonet will share aplenty with the Hyundai Venue and will ride on the same platform. It will also offer the same engine options, which will include an 83 PS 1.2-litre naturally-aspirated petrol engine, a 120 PS 1.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine and a 100 PS 1.5-litre diesel engine. Prices are likely to start at Rs 8 lakh and go all the way to Rs 13 lakh (ex-showroom).
