All Bugattis are pretty special in their own right, and by nature, are extremely desirable. The French luxury marque is famous for rolling out quite a few exotic and unique versions of its already special Chiron hypercar. Now, we have one more version to add to that drool-worthy list – welcome the new Chiron Sport Les Legendes du Ciel. Translated into English, “Les Legendes du Ciel” becomes “Sky Legends.” This special edition of the Chiron Sport has been built in honor of the French Air Force’s daredevil pilots during the First World War.
During a time when aviation was still in its infancy, these brave pilots put their lives on the line each time they stepped into the cockpit of those fabulous airplanes. In fact, Ettore Bugatti was known for his close ties with the French aviation industry. He used to build aircraft engines since 1915, even developing a whole aircraft in 1937. Furthermore, few of those daredevil pilots even became racing drivers after their stint in the cockpit. It was this bond and lineage that Bugatti wanted to preserve and honor with a very special car.
Stephan Winkelmann, President of Bugatti, said in a statement,
“Bugatti has had close associations with aviation since the company was established more than 110 years ago. Many successful Bugatti racing drivers such as Albert Divo, Robert Benoist, and Bartolomeo ‘Meo’ Costantini flew for the French Air Force, the French aviator legend Roland Garros privately drove a Bugatti Type 18 to be as fast on the road as in the air. It is therefore almost an obligation for us today to pay tribute to the legends of that time and dedicate a special edition to them.”
The Bugatti Chiron Sport Les Legendes du Ciel, as the name suggests, is based on the Chiron Sport. However, the keen-eyed amongst you will spot this Chiron’s special “Gris Serpent” matt grey exterior paint scheme. This grey color is a throwback to those early planes that graced the skies in the 1920s. To contrast the dark main tone, the Les Legendes du Ciel edition also features a thick white stripe running the car’s whole length. Meanwhile, the French tricolor is painted on the exposed carbon-fiber and the leading edge of the side skirts. Finally, the obligatory “Les Legendes du Ciel” logo was painted over the front wheel arches.
The interior of this special edition Chiron is draped in beautiful light brown Gaucho leather. It contrasts with a dual-pane glass roof, which looks fabulous and allows natural lighting to enter the cabin. Moreover, the glass roof allows occupants to look up at the sky and imagine the experience of being in the cockpit of an open-top aircraft of the 1920s. There are beautiful aluminium inlays in this interior as well, accompanied by a few nifty touches for this special edition.
For example, there is a “Les Légendes du Ciel” logo inside a little cubby in the center armrest area and on the door sills – both finished in diamond-cut aluminium trim. The same logo appears on the ground whenever you open the door and are etched on the headrests, too. Even the door pads here are special, featuring a hand-sketched depiction of a race between Bugatti’s first-ever car (the Type 13) and a Nieuport 17 biplane from 1916.
Finally, the little cubby in the middle also sports the “1 of 20” numbering to remind you of this car’s exclusivity further. As with any Chiron, the rest of the interior of this one is immaculate and absolutely luxurious. Bugatti doesn’t do cheap, so you will not find anything plebian to be bothered with in this cabin.
In terms of its powerplant potency, neither the Nieuport 17 nor Bugatti’s Type 13 can match the Chiron Sport Les Legendes du Ciel’s raw firepower. Its massive 8.0-liter W16 engine has nearly twice the number of cylinders as the biplane and makes 100 times more power than the Type 13. If its 1,479hp wasn’t impressive enough, this quad-turbocharged volcano of an engine also pumps out 1,600Nm of torque! A 7-speed dual-clutch gearbox is charged with handling all this grunt, and all four contact patches then translate that it into forward movement.
Unleash it, and the Chiron Sport will rush towards the horizon like a crazed beast. It will blow past 100 kmph (from a standstill) in just 2.4 seconds, while 200 kmph will become a distant memory in a mere 6.5 seconds. Bugatti has been kind enough to limit the Chiron Sport’s top speed to a cute 420 kmph. Obviously, all of this performance and exclusivity of the Chiron Sport Les Legendes du Ciel comes at a staggering cost. And that cost is a starting price of 2.88 million Euros or roughly 25.40 crore Rupees! So it is either this or a medium-sized airport. Also, there will only ever be 20 of this special edition Chiron Sport for the whole world.
