Tata Motors recently updated their hot-selling compact SUV, the Nexon, with another variant. After launching a premium XZ variant about a month ago, the Nexon now gets the addition of an AMT gearbox. Tata has termed their AMT gearbox technology as “HyprDrive”. The Tata Nexon AMT will only be available on the top model XZ+ variant. The AMT equipped version has been christened as XZA+ to differentiate from the manual variant.
The Tata Nexon AMT will be available in both petrol as well as diesel options. While the official launch has been stated now, the bookings for the car had already started in April. Mr.Mayenk Pareek, President – Passenger Vehicle Unit, Tata Motors stated that they have immense faith in the suitability of AMT technology for the Indian market. He said that they wish to introduce new products that align well with the demand of their customer demographic. Along with the Nexon AMT, Tata will also be premiering the “IMAGINATOR” online customization platform. This platform will allow users to personalize the car they wish to buy to their individual taste.
Visually, the Nexon AMT is no different from the standard Nexon. The only visible difference is in the gear lever design and the fact that there is no clutch pedal. The Tata Nexon AMT is the first AMT equipped car in India to come with three switchable driving modes. It also comes equipped with a creep function to assist in stop and go traffic and a smart hill assist that will prevent the car from rolling backward on a slope.
The Nexon AMT gets the top-notch equipment as seen in the manual XZ+ variant. The most notable one is going to be the floating 6.5 inch-touchscreen infotainment screen. The system comes with a Harman-Kardon 8 speaker unit and Android Auto connectivity as well. Engine options will be the same as in the manual, namely the 1.2-litre Revotron Petrol and the 1.5-litre Revotorq Diesel. The petrol motor puts out 110 bhp of peak power and 170 Nm of peak torque. The diesel engine puts the same amount of power but a generous 260 Nm of peak torque.
The Tata Nexon AMT has been priced at Rs.9.41 lakhs for the petrol version while the diesel will be priced at Rs.10.30 lakhs. While it doesn’t have any direct competition as such, it will still put pressure on other compact SUVs from Ford, Mahindra, and Maruti-Suzuki. Although out of those, only Mahindra has an AMT car in the segment in the form of the TUV300 AMT.
