Tata Motors launched the new Tigor sedan yesterday with prices starting at Rs 4.7 lakh, ex-showroom Delhi. This makes it the most affordable sedan as compared to all its other rivals, namely, the Maruti Dzire, Hyundai Xcent, VW Ameo, Ford Aspire and Honda Amaze. So how does this new kid on the block fare in the segment? Lets have a quick spec look at Tata Tigor vs Rivals comparo:

All these five cars are under 4 meters in length in order to enjoy small car tax benefits. That said, the Dzire and the Aspire are the widest here. The Maruti offering is also the tallest at 1555 mm. In terms of design, the new Tigor manages to stand out from the crowd, thanks to the ‘styleback’ rear design and those stunning alloy wheels (only on petrol model). Maruti will be launching the new Dzire very soon and as per initial images, it does look good. From the rest of the gang, we would pick the Aspire to be a good looking sedan too.

Tata Tigor vs Rivals: Interiors

All these cars are tailor made to offer good family space on the inside. However, in terms of pure passenger room, the Tigor falls behind cars like the Aspire and the Amaze. These two compact sedans offer the highest leg room and knee room, especially at the back. That said, the Tigor hits back with a best in class boot space of 419 litres which is as much as 30% more than the current segment leader, the Dzire.
The Tigor also scores very high in terms of cabin quality and design for this price. The top end model offers a touch screen infotainment along with a suite of mobile apps. It however lacks rear air-con vents. If you want comfort, the Tigor does well. But if you will be driving regularly with your family on board, look elsewhere.

Tata Tigor vs Rivals: Engine

The Tigor comes with two engine options of a 1.2 petrol and a 1.05 diesel. In terms of petrol, on paper, it offers decent power and torque, which is more or less similar to that of the competition. In real world driving however, refinement is not on par with cars like the Dzire but the Tigor ends up delivering excellent fuel economy numbers.

The diesel Tigor has the smallest engine capacity here. It also makes the least power and the lowest torque. However, thanks to clever gearing, you do not feel the lack of punch during daily driving. Its only when you are driving with a load of five passengers with the air-con running, lack of power is evident. If you want performance, the Ameo and the Aspire are our pick here.

Tata Tigor vs Rivals: Value

This is the biggest USP of the Tigor. Tata has played the pricing card very well. The petrol range stars at Rs 4.7 lakh which undercuts the rivals by a good margin. Likewise, the diesel range starts at Rs 5.6 lakh which is as much as a lakh less than the Amaze.

Even the top end versions, given the feature list, are priced attractively. In terms of value for money, there is no denying the fact that the new Tata Tigor offers best bang for your buck. However, if you want performance, this car will not tick the right box. Don’t forget to have a look at our 5 reasons to buy the Tigor article for more details.
