Top 5 Best Selling SUVs in India in October 2020

It wouldn’t be a lie to assume that 2020 hasn’t been the most celebrated year in recent times. Thanks to global pandemics’ innate appetite to bring economies crashing down, many usually refrain from making big purchases. Because car sales are hugely directed by consumer behavior, automakers have had a tough time this year.

Thankfully, there are signs of recovery in the industry, and the car-buying public is coming back to the showrooms. Looking at the sales figures for October 2020, it is becoming pretty clear that SUVs are still very popular among buyers. Therefore, here are the Top 5 best-selling SUVs in India last month.

1. Hyundai Creta

Taking the first spot on this list is none other than India’s favorite SUV – the Hyundai Creta. Hyundai Motor India managed to sell an incredible 14,023 Cretas in October, making it the best-selling SUV in the country. While its in-your-face exterior styling may not be everyone’s cup of tea, that sure hasn’t stopped plenty of people from getting their hands on this compact crossover. The snazzy exterior is matched by the Creta’s well-built and feature-rich interior. You get a massive panoramic sunroof, paddle shifters, an electronic parking brake, and a 10.25-inch infotainment touchscreen, among many others.

The Hyundai Creta is available with three BS-compliant engines. This includes a 1.5-liter turbo-diesel with 113hp, a 1.4-liter turbo-petrol with 138hp, and a 1.5-liter naturally-aspirated petrol motor with 113hp. The Creta transmission options include a 6-speed manual, 6-speed torque converter automatic, an IVT (Hyundai speak for a CVT), and a 7-speed dual-clutch gearbox. Safety features on the Hyundai Creta include 6 airbags, Electronic Stability Control (ESC), Vehicle Stability Management (VSM), Hill Assist Control (HAC), rear parking sensors, and a rearview camera with active guidelines. The Hyundai Creta is priced between Rs 9.81 lakh to Rs 17.31 lakh (ex-showroom).

2. Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza

Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza

Streaking in at the number two spot is the Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza, with 12,087 units sold in October 2020. Maruti Suzuki launched the Vitara Brezza for the first time back in early 2016, and since then, over 5 lakh Brezza’s have been sold in India. It is possibly the best-selling subcompact crossover currently in the market. If you like the boxy and no-nonsense silhouette of typical SUVs, then the Vitara Brezza’s simple but old-school exterior design will be to your liking. Measuring just under 4 meters in length, this is also an SUV that is fairly easy to drive and maneuver in congested spaces. The interior of the Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza is simple and straight-forward, too. Everything falls to hand easily, and ergonomics aren’t a concern as such.

However, the all-grey and black cabin of the Brezza isn’t very exciting or fun to look at. Plus, there are loads of hard plastic bits here, which again drags down a sense of solidity and richness. On the features front, the Vitara Brezza gets automatic projector LED headlamps, push-button start, auto-folding door mirrors, cruise control, automatic AC, automatic windshield wipers, and a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system. The Brezza’s safety equipment includes dual airbags, ABS with EBD, Hill Hold Assist (HHA), and rear parking sensors with a camera. Powered by a 103hp 1.5-liter petrol engine, the Brezza is offered with a 5-speed manual or 4-speed automatic gearbox. The Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza costs between Rs 7.34 lakh to Rs 11.15 lakh (ex-showroom).

3. Kia Sonet

At number three, with 11,721 units sold in October 2020, we have the all-new Kia Sonet. The Kia Sonet is one of the newest cars on this list, and it has obviously been very popular among SUV buyers in India. It is also Kia’s best-selling SUV in the country, while its subcompact exterior dimensions and bold but modern styling come together without a fuss. The Sonet is loaded with plenty of modern gizmos and equipment, with the build quality and interior appointments being just as good. Once in the driver’s seat, you will like this cabin even more. There is the thick flat-bottom steering wheel, which is backed by a sporty gauge cluster and interestingly-designed AC vents.

Features wise, the Kia Sonet packs in a 7-speaker Bose sound system, remote engine start, ventilated front seats, electric sunroof, automatic climate control, cruise control, wireless charger, smartwatch connectivity, and a 10.25-inch infotainment head unit. Meanwhile, its safety suite includes 6 airbags, tire pressure monitor, Hill Hold Control (HHC), Electronic Stability Control (ESC), Vehicle Stability Management (VSM), all-round parking sensors, and a backup camera. The Kia Sonet is offered with three engines. There is a 118hp 1.0-liter turbo-petrol, a 1.5-liter turbo-diesel in two states of tune (the highest output one makes 113hp), and a 1.2-liter naturally-aspirated petrol motor with 82hp. The Sonet’s transmission options are as follows: a 5-speed manual, 6-speed manual, 6-speed automatic, 6-speed automated manual, or a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic. Prices of the Kia Sonet range between Rs 6.71 lakh to Rs 12.99 lakh, ex-showroom.

4. Hyundai Venue

2020 Hyundai Venue

With 9,020 units sold in October 2020, the penultimate spot goes to the all-new Hyundai Venue. Hyundai’s smallest SUV offering and direct cousin to the Kia Sonet, the Venue, is also a sub-4 meter crossover. If you are ok with a hatchback-on-stilts look such small dimensions bring, this ‘SUV’ should be right up your alley. As expected, the small proportions reflect on the Venue’s cabin space as well. While the seats up front are comfy and good overall, the rear bench is only good for carrying two adults. You could try and squeeze in a third person, but then they might not talk to you afterward. However, there is little to complain about when it concerns the Venue’s cabin build quality and general fit-and-finish.

The safety features of this little Hyundai SUV are good, too. They include stuff like ABS with EBD, 6 airbags, ISOFIX rear seats, parking sensors with a reversing camera, Electronic Stability Control (ESC), Vehicle Stability Management (VSM), and Hill Assist Control (HAC). The Venue is available with three engine-gearbox combinations, including a turbo-petrol and turbo-diesel with manual and automatic transmissions. The Hyundai venue costs between Rs 6.75 lakh to Rs 11.59 lakh (ex-showroom) in terms of its pricing.

5. Kia Seltos

Last but certainly not least, we have the Kia Seltos. In October 2020, Kia sold 8,900 units of the Seltos in India. That puts this compact SUV just a few paces behind the smaller and cheaper Hyundai Venue. The unique exterior styling and design elements of the Kia Seltos, combined with its traditional SUV-like upright stance, makes it a very prominent sight on Indian roads. The suave styling of this interior also impresses with its high-quality build and great fit & finish. It sure feels premium and expensive – upping the ante over the Hyundai Creta, too. Features wise, the Seltos gets ventilated front seats, a Bose premium audio system, wireless charger, 360-degree cameras, power-adjustable driver’s seat, LED interior lights, drive-mode & traction-mode selectors, and a 10.25-inch touch-infotainment system with smartphone connectivity tech.

This includes a 1.5-liter petrol engine with 113hp, a 1.4-liter turbo-petrol with 138hp, and a 113hp turbo-diesel with 250Nm of torque. Meanwhile, transmissions include a 6-speed manual, 6-speed automatic, a CVT, and a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox.
