In this series, we intend to start off with specific Hyundai car maintenance tips. Why are model-specific car maintenance tips important? Well, read on! With numerous car manufacturers and corresponding models that have made their entry into the country, we have seen a surge in the number of cars in India over the past two decades. When it comes to car maintenance tips, gone are the days where we had a handful of car models with local mechanics well versed with the persistent problems of all the models available in the Indian market.

Now with close to 200 car models on offer in the country, we often wonder who to take advice from for specific car maintenance tips.

These were the initial notions which came to our minds when we thought of generating a list of things that one should be aware of if you happen to own the said model or are planning to buy a used car of the same make that has covered a certain mileage on the odometer.

Helping us in this process is Hardeep Sikka Ji, who is a veteran in the automotive field with an experience of more than 26 years. Over the years he has amassed in-depth mechanical knowledge of all the car models available in the country.

Also joining him in this process is Mr. Om Prakash, who has involved himself in the testing and inspection of more than 1000+ automobiles over the past 6 years and is also an encyclopedia on Hyundai cars in the country.

Let’s start with India’s second largest automaker – Hyundai.  The Korean carmaker entered the country in 1998 and currently sells 10 models in the country. Here are our insights into a few of their popular models, commonly observed troubles and solutions.

Just to clarify, these are not manufacturing defects, but are minor niggles noticed by owners over the years and can be avoided or solved with necessary Hyundai care tips as mentioned below.

Hyundai i20 Car Maintenance Tips

Hyundai i20

Issue#1: In Hyundai i20 (and Verna) clutch pedal might harden up after the vehicle clocks 20000 km.

Reason: Reduction in oil levels or entry of air into the hydraulic system.

Solution: As and when the clutch pedal hardens up, it is advised to top up the oil or suck the air from the hydraulic system, which helps the clutch to loosen up.

Hyundai care tip: This issue can be overcome by periodic checks of the hydraulic oil levels and quality in the hydraulic fluid container used by the system. Avoid keeping your foot rested on the clutch pedal while driving. Always press the clutch pedal fully while shifting gears and avoid partial clutch inputs during gear changes which result in clutch slippage and enhanced wear.

Issue#2: A notably louder noise from the AC compressor is witnessed while driving during summer after a car has done more than 20,000 km.

Reason: This is generally observed due to the AC filter getting clogged with dust.

Solution: Preventive maintenance of cleaning the AC filter and condenser regularly (every 5000 km) will come in handy here.

Hyundai care tip: The AC filter can be cleaned by blowing compressed air at low pressure, whereas condenser can be cleaned by using a pressurized jet of water which can be sprayed on the condenser fins directly.

Issue#3: An abnormal noise during panic braking is noticed occasionally once the car has run nearly 20,000 km.

Reason: Fret not! It’s just the sound of Antilock Braking System (ABS) actuating the brakes.

Hyundai care tip: A simple way to ease the process is to apply the brakes effectively by pressing the pedal uniformly till the car slows down.

Hyundai EON CarMaintenance Tips

Hyundai Eon

Issue#1: An abnormal underbody noise can be noticed with the Hyundai Eon after it finishes 20000 km.

Reason: This is mainly due to loose exhaust tailpipe and silencer assembly hanger. If not resolved, this may result in vibrations and increased noise levels.

Hyundai care tip: An easy way to overcome this is to get the hanger bolt tightened to the specified torque. You can do it on your own, provided you are comfortable lying under the car. An alternative here would be to get it done at the nearest workshop.

Hyundai i10 Car Maintenance Tips

Hyundai i10

Issue#1: An interruptive noise is felt while turning the steering wheel.

Reason: This is felt due to steering linkage components turning dry due to lack of lubrication and accumulation of dust Also, in the absence of lubrication, the moisture aids in rusting of these components. This is accentuated by washing the car occasionally with water and letting it dry naturally in sun.

Hyundai care tip: We can prevent the same by proper lubrication of steering linkage components by applying lubricating grease on these components.

Issue#2: A high pitch slipping noise is noticed while starting the engine.

Reason: This sound occurs due the over tightening of the engine belt, which adds extra load on the pulley. Over a period of time, the belt loses its elasticity which resulting in the reduction of slack.

Hyundai care tip: We can overcome this by properly checking belt slack by pressing your thumb against the belt, which should ideally depress by 15-20 mm. If it is less than the prescribed limit, it can be adjusted by loosening the pulley positioning bolt.

Hyundai Grand i10/ Xcent Car Maintenance Tips

Hyundai Grand i10

Issue#1: Occasionally in the Hyundai Grand i10 it is observed that the AC control and temperature knob tightens up, and thus, turning AC operation a little harder than usual.

Reason: This is mainly due to non-usage of AC knob and dust accumulation over a period of time. We should prefer not to run the car with windows rolled down on dusty roads as it results in dust accumulation around the AC mode control and temperature control knob.

Hyundai care tip: The best way to overcome this is to drive the car with the AC on, windows closed and do turn the AC mode and temperature control knob at least once in a day.

Issue#2: Damages to the radiator support panel

Reason: In the Hyundai i10, the front radiator support is made of plastic. This definitely helps in reducing weight but, it is also prone to damage and can break due to jerks received while driving on rough roads and tackling speed breakers.

Hyundai care tip:  The simple solution is to just be careful while tackling potholes and speed breakers.

Hyundai Verna Car Maintenance Tips

Hyundai Verna

Issue#1: The Hyundai Verna is one of the popular sedans in this segment, and once it crosses 50000 km, you generally notice an abnormal noise from its suspension while tackling rough roads and speed breakers.

Reason: Accumulation of dust and insufficient lubrication.

Hyundai care tip:  The suspension components of the Verna are required to be cleaned and lubricated on a regular basis. By physical inspection of lower arms, tie rod ends, bushings and carrying out the required lubrication, we can prevent this abnormal noise and thereby, prolong the life of its suspension components.
