Japanese carmaker Mitsubishi used to be a very popular brand in the Indian automotive industry a couple of decades ago. They silently went off the map are were replaced with some of the bigger names in the market like Maruti Suzuki, Tata, Honda, Hyundai, and Ford. However, it seems that Mitsubishi has some plans for their comeback and has a lineup of new vehicles set to launch in India in the near future. Let’s see what we can expect to get when Mitsubishi releases its latest cars in the country.
|Mitsubishi EVO XI||Rs. 50.00 Lakh|
|Mitsubishi Mirage||Rs. 5.00 Lakh|
|Mitsubishi Pajero Sport 2020||Rs. 25.00 Lakh|
|Mitsubishi Xpander||Rs. 10.0 Lakh|
|Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross||Rs. 18.0 Lakh|
|Expected Engine||Petrol, Hybrid|
The Mitsubishi EVO XI was initially supposed to launch in India back in 2015/2016 but, as mentioned earlier, the Japanese brand failed to create any buzz in the Indian market. As a result, the release date for the EVO XI was continuously pushed back and it is now expected to make its way into the country sometime in 2022/2023. The powerful sedan will, quite obviously, replace the EVO X which also didn’t make its way to the Indian market. In terms of specifications, not a lot is known about the EVO XI but from Mitsubishi’s claims of the car being “Mean and Green”, we can expect it to come with a hybrid drivetrain option. Some of the features that we guess will be included in the EVO XI are LED headlamps and taillights, automatic air-conditioning, a touchscreen infotainment system with Android Auto, and Apple CarPlay connectivity, power doors and windows, and adjustable front seats. Safety features are also unknown right now, but we can expect it to come with ABD with EBD, parking sensors, seatbelt warning, ISOFIX Child Seat Anchors, multiple airbags, and hill-assist.
Although Mitsubishi has kept its upcoming launch dates a secret, there has been some news available for the upcoming Mirage. For starters, it looks like the Mirage will be available for a starting price of about Rs. 5 Lakh which will put it in an extremely competitive market. The Mirage is a hatchback that should fit in alongside the Maruti Suzuki S-Presso, Datsun redi-GO, and Renault KWID. When it comes to the engine, we have no information on the Mirage but we do know it will be a petrol engine and could also come with a CNG option as well. As expected with a hatchback in this price segment, the Mirage will come with a manual gearbox only. According to the latest leaks, the Mirage will offer a mileage of about 18 kmpl and will come with a 35-litre fuel tank. Some of the features expected to come on the Mirage include power steering, 14-inch alloy wheels, a stereo audio setup, air-conditioning and heating, and power windows and doors. Some of the basic safety features we can expect on the Mirage include seatbelt warning, ABS with EBD, airbags, and parking sensors.
The Mitsubishi Pajero Sport 2020 is the upgrade of one of the most used cars in the brand’s lineup – the original Pajero which was released in 2012. Based on the “Dynamic Shield” design by the company, the SUV will be made bigger and sturdier than before. The grille of the Pajero Sport 2020 is sleek and new as is the new headlamp that is now in a split design rather than a solid one. On the rear too, the car will feature new taillights that have a slim profile and LED graphics. Finally, in the exterior department, the bumpers get a few tweaks which will give the car a sportier look. In the power department, the Pajero Sport 2020 will house a BSVI-compliant 2.4L diesel engine that produces 181Ps of power and 430Nm of torque and will be mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission.
|Engine||1.5L 4-Cylinder MIVEC Petrol|
|Transmission||5-Speed Manual, 4-Speed Automatic|
We have already seen the Mitsubishi Xpander being sold in many parts of Asia but it is yet to enter the Indian market and we can expect it to hit dealerships sometime in 2022 or early 2023. The car will sport the “Dynamic Shield” design from Mitsubishi which gives the car an angular front and a boxy overall design. When it comes to rivalry, the Xpander will go up against models like the Maruti Ertiga, Honda BR-V, and the Mahindra Marazzo. Powering the car is a 1.5L 4-cylinder MIVEC petrol engine that produces 150Ps of power and 141Nm of torque. The engine is mated to a 5-speed manual or a 4-speed automatic transmission gearbox which gives the car some serious power and speed. In terms of features, the Xpander has a lot of offers including keyless entry, a push-button to start/stop the car, a 7-inch touchscreen LCD display, cruise control, telescopic steering wheel, GPS navigation, and power outlets on all 3 rows of seats. The safety features on the Xpander include dual airbags, traction control, ABS with EBD, Hill Start Assist, parking sensors, and Electronic Stability Control.
|Engine||1.5L 4-Cylinder Turbocharged Petrol|
|Transmission||6-Speed Manual, CVT Automatic|
Mitsubishi is not known for their premium SUVs but the upcoming Eclipse Cross looks to have some promise and could quite easily go up against some of the bigger names in the market right now. In the front, the Eclipse Cross is fitted with a large grille that is overlaid with horizontal chrome slats. On each side, there are sleek LED headlamps that sit above the large fog lamps. The air dam is found below the grille and makes up the remaining of the front bumper. The rear of the car features an extended lip that houses the LED taillights and a large, sturdy bumper. Although the interiors consist of plastic, the quality of the plastic is extremely premium and adds a soft touch to the dashboard. There is a 7-inch infotainment system that offers complete control over your favourite music and other content. Powering the Eclipse Cross is a 1.5L 4-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine that is mated to a 6-speed manual transmission or a CVT automatic gearbox. There are rumours of a 2.2L diesel engine that could be included in the near future, but would not make it to India this year. With a price starting at about 18.0 lakh, the Eclipse Cross is set to be one of the most popular SUV cars available in the country.
