Volkswagen Likely To Introduce An Entry-Level EV Dubbed The ID 1

According to reports, Volkswagen will be introducing an entry-level EV for the European markets. The brand has been eyeing the European and urban emerging markets and plans to introduce EVs after successfully doing so in other countries.

The car will begin production in 2025 in Spain. Meanwhile, India might see the ID 4 soon after getting a cheeky glimpse of it at the 2020 Auto Expo.

“It made sense to come into EVs top-down, but by 2025 we think the time will be right for a Polo-sized car. We have a new generation of batteries; aside from the raw material prices, now our costs are coming down with scale. The demand is there and the margins are there for small electric cars to be profitable.”

Herbert Diess, CEO, Volkswagen Group

It is speculated that the entry-level EV will be dubbed the ID 1 and based on the VW Polo, as far as the physicality is concerned. Reports also suggest that it will be heavily influenced by the VW ID 4. It will be based on the MEB entry platform and the ID Life concept that the brand debuted at the Munich Motor Show. It will surely be a treat for those who love to see high technology and futurism meet the famous carmaker in a spectacular union.

Based on the sneak peek, a few observations can be made. The ID will come with a 231hp front-mounted motor and a 57kWh battery. Visually, it will be an elegant and sleek model, with an angular front end and multiple likings to its other ID counterparts. Its efficiency and digital functionality are likely to be its USPs.
