BMW X6 2020 summary

The year 2007 saw the launch of the first generation of the X6. Subsequently, the second and third-generation (current-generation) models followed. All the iterations have retained the coupe styling distinctive to the X6 SUV line-up.

The first-generation X6, also called the E71, was equipped with an in-line-six and V8 with turbo and hybrid upgrades to the engines. Some models came with a 3-phase synchronous electric motor. This E71 model offered three types of transmission: a 6-speed, a 7-speed and an 8-speed automatic with options to choose from ActiveHybrid system.

The second-generation F16 did not see major internal and external design changes. But the manufacturer reduced the transmission options in it to a single 8-speed automatic. The third and ongoing model of the X6, the G06, saw an exterior upgrade with an extended wheelbase and an improved 8-speed ZF 8HP automatic transmission. The M version of the X6 also received sportier upgrades and aesthetics.

Considering the engine specs of the xLine and M Sport variant, they both have identical power figures with a maximum power output of 335.25 bhp at 5500-6500 rpm and 450 Nm at 1500-5200 rpm. This engine, paired with an 8-Speed Steptronic transmission, can average almost 10.31 kmpl which is quite impressive considering its weight and dimension.

The X6 is only available with a petrol option with no diesel or electric variants. But the mileage from the petrol compensates well enough.

The BMW X6, launched in 2020, is the latest model in the line-up with a price tag of Rs. 1.01 Crore (ex-showroom). It is available in two variants, the xLine and M Sport.

BMW also plans on launching variants such as the xDrive30d, M50i, and the M50d as the upcoming models. Both the trims get similar technology and features. But the M Sport variant exclusively gets M brake calipers with a blue paint job, M exhaust pipes, and M adaptive suspension. The interiors for the M Sport version also come with hand stitched M featured upholstery and sports seat with M badging.

Other than the generic BMW features such as xDrive (four-wheel-drive) system, iDrive assistance, the newer models get gesture control for the infotainment system, front parking sensors, 8 airbags, and ABS with an EBD braking system.

The price of the xLine variant starts from Rs. 1.01 Crore, which is the same as the M Sport variant. However, the on-road pricing of the respective models will vary in the case of customization to the various trim levels.

Coming to its competitors, the X6 competes in the SUV coupe segment with rivals like the Mercedes-Benz GLE, BMW X5, Land Rover Range Rover Sport, and the Range Rover Evoque.

  • Things We Like
  • Things we don’t like

While weighing over 2 tons, the mileage seems to be a win-win for the X6. Its competitors, however, do not provide nearly the same economy.

With a 3.5 ft legroom at the back, the X6 offers a roomy and spacious interior for passengers for longer journeys and travel.

The interiors and the quality materials for the dash and cabin give the passengers an eloquent feel of luxury while providing all the needed comfort to the driver.

The iDrive assistance from BMW is undoubtedly the best across various segments and offers driving aids for convenience.

The X6 offers around 20 safety features like front and rear Park Distance Control and Active Driving Assistance programs apart from the generic option of the ABS with an EBD and 8 airbags. It is also equipped with an Active Protection System that includes seat belt-tightening, shutting windows, and after-crash braking in case of an accident.

The big 20-inch tires soak up most of the jerk from the ground and make the ride smooth and seamlessly comfortable.

Due to its coupe design, it only has 500 litres of boot space. This space is lesser than its competitors, such as the massive 825 litres in the Mercedes-Benz GLE.

The design of the car adds to its aesthetics. But it amounts to lesser headroom for the rear passengers, particularly someone over 6 ft.

The rear visibility of the car is also a downside as it obstructs handling and manoeuvering such a massive car.

The steering feels heavy-handed at lower speeds and is suitable only when driven at a higher pace. This aspect makes driving in the city cumbersome.

With a starting price of Rs. 1 Crore, it is more expensive than the Porsche Macan (which starts at around Rs. 84 lakhs) and Audi Q8 (priced around Rs. 99 lakhs).

Without any offering with respect to the fuel options and only two variants, it limits the consumer’s choices.

The overall design language of the X6 asserts confidence for on-road and off-road driving as it lends a sophisticated blend of luxury, technology, and performance. The styling is as aesthetically pleasing from the inside as it is from the outside.

It has tons of safety features that ensure that it can supply both power and security for the passengers. The technology is top-notch. One can never be bored with features such as gesture control, artful interiors with wooden trims, and functions such as heated and ventilated seats.

With the amount of comfort and convenience it offers, one cannot complain about spending a lot of time in the cabin while driving. The convenience and comfort of a BMW goes without saying. The manufacturers have been in the market for a considerable amount, which allows them to bring forth futuristic design ideas.

But the hefty price tag that the X6 comes with can be a disadvantage for buyers. Also, considering its practicality in terms of cargo and passenger-carrying space, its rivals have a better offering. It also has reduced rear visibility owing to its coupe design.

However, there are driver aids that can compensate for most of the drawbacks of the car. The targeted buyers will be interested and drawn towards its ability as a family carrier and its capability in terms of safety, reliability, and design language. It appeals to various groups of buyers due to the German carmaker's well-established rapport and quality offerings.
