One of the most iconic and historic car manufacturers in India, Hindustan Motors was founded by the Birla Industrial Group along with Morris Motors, a British automotive firm. Set up in 1942, the company came up with many models but the biggest success came with the launch of Ambassador in 1957. Often called the king of Indian Roads, Ambassador comes from Hindustan Motors. Considered as a motor icon, the car soon emerged as the top taxi car beating the top manufacturing rivals from all corners of the world. In fact, the pre-owned Hindustan Motor Cars were also in high demand and captured the entire Indian market.

Everyone’s favorite, from politician to celebrity, Ambassador was present in India from 1957 to 2014 and was the first car to be built in India after independence. The company, now, is planning to make a comeback in India in a French avatar. As now the company has better plans in India, the price of the used Hindustan Motors cars is also expected to rise.

Hindustan Motors – Resale Value

India’s best-known taxi cab and rare home-grown transportation medium at that time was the HM produced Ambassador sedan. Though it was discontinued in the year 2014, Ambassador was admired for its roomy interiors, solid built quality and robust styling. This second hand Hindustan Motor car is still in demand and many people are still not willing to sell used Hindustan Motor car. Ambassador served as a desi limousine for politicians and the affluent a long time and is till date known for its generous attributes. Additionally, it was also used as the famed black-n-yellow taxi cab across all the metro cities of India. At its peak, Hindustan Motors’ most wanted model attracted quite a respectable resale value in the used car bazaar.

Currently, Hindustan Motors sells only Japan-based Mitsubishi brand cars in the Indian car market. Mitsubishi line-up witnesses tough competition from other leading car makers in the country. Most likely you may find many Ambassadors fitted with alloy wheels when you search for pre-owned Hindustan Motors cars.

Hindustan Motors History

Hindustan Motors was established in India by Mr. BM Birla in collaboration with Lord Nuffield of Morris Motors. The company came into existence in the year 1942, at Baroda (Gujarat), but the manufacturing plant was shifted to West Bengal in the year 1948. After the relocation, the production began for the Morris designed ‘Ambassador’ or ‘Amby’ - India’s most successful car of that era.

The launch of Ambassador was followed by many ventures and collaboration of the company with international brands, such as General Motors and Mitsubishi. When the company stopped production of its home car, Ambassador, in 2014, the used Hindustan Motors car continued to sell and the company continued to trade Mitsubishi even after that, something the company still does.

In 2017, the company got into a formal agreement with French Automaker PSA Group regarding the sale of Ambassador. With this all going, Hindustan Motors is all set to make a comeback in the Indian market by the next year.
