Mahindra S204 will be based on SsangYong Tivoli XLV (also known as Tivoli Air in Korean market). SsangYong Motors is a South Korean automobile company which is owned by Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd. The Tivoli was launched in South Korea in the year 2015 and was the first car manufactured by SsangYong under the then-new ownership of Mahindra.
Tivoli XLV (or Tivoli Air) is the extended version of the standard Tivoli which features a lengthened rear by about 9.6 inches. This brings the car’s boot space to a whopping 720 litres. The car is offered with an all-wheel-drive configuration to help it beat any terrain.
The S204 will most probably pack a 1.5 l petrol as the current Tivoli XLV does. The engine offers a maximum power of 128 ps/ 6000 rpm and a maximum torque of 160 Nm/ 4600 rpm. The XLV features options of a 6-speed manual transmission as well as a 6-speed automatic transmission, and it can be safely guessed that Mahindra will offer these options in the S204 as well.
Some suggest that Mahindra could be using the 1.5 l turbo T-GDI for the S204 as well. The engine has been co-developed by Mahindra and SsangYong and has been used in some of Mahindra’s other recent cars. This engine is a direct-injection 4-cylinder one that is both powerful and efficient at the same time. Tivoli XLV’s performance shows a great deal of fuel economy, power optimisation, and quality can be safely expected in the upcoming S204

Known for its unapologetically flamboyant yet practical SUVs, Mahindra is now back with another feather in its cap. Set to hit the markets by mid-2022, the Mahindra S204 is a compact crossover SUV that is definitely one to watch out for. The manufacturer has constantly been working on bringing out new cars to the market for the past four to five years. Some examples would be the TUV 300, XUV 300, XUV 700, etc. The goal of Mahindra is to bring out the best economical SUVs to the common car buyers in India without compromising on features or performance. It is to be noted that S204 is probably just a codename for this new car for the time being. Reports suggest that Mahindra could be introducing 1.5 l diesel engine and 1.5 l turbo T-GDI petrol engine options for this car. It is the same engine configuration that powers cars like XUV300 and Marazzo. The S204 will probably be presented as a seven-seater crossover SUV and will have an extended rear frame for additional luggage space. Speculations suggest that the car could be having manual and automatic transmission options as well. The expected price of Mahindra S204 in Indian markets would be somewhere around 12 lakh. At this price range and the aforementioned probable configurations, the S204 could be giving a good competition to cars like Kia Seltos, Hyundai Creta, Renault Captur, Nissan Terrano, etc. The information about Mahindra S204 is scarce at the moment, but one thing is for sure: this car will revolutionise the compact SUV segment in the Indian markets.
One of the major pros of this Indianised version of SsangYong Tivoli Air is that it is very stylish and sleek compared to usual Mahindra SUVs that Indian buyers have seen.
Predicted features like advanced infotainment, leather-based upholstery, sunroof, automatic climate control are some of the many great advantages that the S204 will offer.
Like its Korean counterpart, this car will also be big on safety features like airbags, ABS, AEBS, sensor and camera functions, dual pre-tensioner seat belts, anti-roll-over, hill start assist, hill descent control, and many such others.
Another advantage of the S204 is its segment-appropriate and affordable pricing of Rs. 12 lakh.
The extended size of the car off the rear end of its wheelbase might be a hassle for easy city driving. Size is also an issue when one has to park in compact spaces.
The SsangYong Tivoli Air has received complaints of being a bit coarse in terms of ride quality and has a slightly greater degree of engine noise when it revs at high speeds.
Some people feel that the Tivoli Air (proposed S204) looks bulkier than the standard Tivoli. That makes it appear a bit boxy even though the manufacturer has loaded it up with stylish elements.
Mahindra does not have the image of one of the more refined car makers in the Indian subcontinent. Buyers who have a sophisticated or composed taste tend to gravitate towards brands like Hyundai or Kia because of this reason.
You surely need to know as a potential buyer that the S204 is a flamboyant and practical addition to the Mahindra family. After all the love that the SsangYong Tivoli XLV has received in overseas markets, the manufacturer plans to bring the product to the Indian buyers. The car is definitely one that is loaded with many exciting features ranging from infotainment to convenience to safety and style. These factors combined with an affordable price tag of 12 lakh INR make this car one to watch out for. Mahindra S204 will be competing against cars like Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos, Renault Captur, Nissan Terrano, etc., which are already quite popular in their own ways in the Indian market. Nonetheless, the universality of Mahindra and easy service availability across India would be a significant factor to play in the advantage of the S204. The S204 is a compact crossover SUV that packs performance with utility and comes with great specifications. It offers an efficient 1.5 l engine, manual and automatic transmission options, and the option of 4-wheel drive. If you are looking for a car that is a pleasure to drive both on and off the road, this car should be on your list for consideration. It is not as refined or sophisticated as its competitors, but that is the image that Mahindra is gradually aiming to change. If you are a middle-class urban buyer who wants a family-sized car that is suitable for daily use as well as long adventurous trips, then the Mahindra S204 is a suitable and wise choice for you.
