History of Maruti Alto:
Maruti Alto was launched in India on 27th September 2000. From that day, Alto has gone through several iterations, and yet, it is one of the most successfully running models on the Indian market today. The fifth generation of the Maruti Alto prototype produced by Suzuki was brought to India as the first-generation model. After a few years, Maruti gave the Alto a mid-life facelift, followed by a complete generation change in 2012. However, Maruti also launched the 1.0-litre version of the Alto and named it the Alto K10. The year 2019 marks Alto’s transition from BS-IV to BS-VI.

The latest update on the Alto came as the BS-VI update in the year 2019. Maruti Suzuki made Alto’s 796cc engine BS-VI compliant and also added safety features like dual front airbags and ABS. A few months after this launch, Maruti Suzuki also introduced the BS6 avatar of the CNG variant of the Alto. Alto’s transition from BS-IV to BS-VI also included a Rs 12,000 price hike.
The Maruti Suzuki Alto is offered in eight variants, including six petrol and two CNG variants. Petrol variants of the Alto are - STD, STD (O), LXI, LXI (O), VXI, and VXI PLUS. CNG variants of the Alto are - LXI S CNG and LXI (O) S CNG.
Maruti’s excellent after-sales service and commendable reliability are one of the top USPs of Alto. Other top features on the alto include the refined 0.8-litre petrol motor and the option of CNG variants.
The price range of Maruti Alto is between Rs 2.99 Lakh to Rs 4.70 lakh. The range of the petrol version of Alto is between Rs 2.99 Lakh to 4.16 lakh, and that of the CNG version of Alto is between 4.66 lakh to Rs 4.70 lakh.

The key rivals of the Alto include the Renault Kwid (0.8-litre) and Datsun Redi-GO (0.8-litre).

The disadvantage of the Maruti Alto is that it offers poor quality of low thickness and seating type low ground clearance. Further, the other drawbacks are mentioned below -
Cramped rear seat space - In terms of dimensions, the Alto 800 is not a very big vehicle, resulting in an overly compact cabin. Although the space in the front part of the car is decent, the rear area is too little for anyone's liking.
Poor build quality - The build quality of the Maruti Alto is also a letdown. The quality of plastics fitted in the cabin is inferior, and even the sheet metal is very light.
No automatic transmission: Unlike the Renault Kwid, the Alto is not offered with an automatic gearbox option.
With over 40 lakh sales under its belt, the Maruti Suzuki Alto has remained the first choice for entry-level hatchback buyers for over 20 years now. The Alto has been the best-seller for 16 consecutive years in India. The peace of mind that you get after buying the Alto has been its major USP. The car is immensely reliable as well as exceptionally light on your pocket. Though it has several downsides like lack of performance, poor build quality, and absence of features like touchscreen infotainment system and AMT gearbox, it is still the most practical option for middle-class people or first-time buyers.

The Alto is powered by Maruti's tried and tested 786cc petrol engine that produces 48hp of power and 69 Nm of torque. The car lacks performance and isn't the best option for long highway rides. However, the Alto shines in city duties with its light and beginner-friendly character. The Alto retains a mileage of 22.05 km/l (ARAI claimed), and if you drive on CNG, it will retain a mileage of 31.59km/kg.
By far, the Alto is the most appropriate option for first-time car buyers looking for an entry-level hatchback. The Alto 800 is economical on the pocket and is perfect for city commutes. However, space and performance are a massive concern for Alto. So, if you have a slightly bigger family or if you need a bit more fun-to-drive car, it's best to look for other options in the market.
