Maruti Suzuki was formerly known as Maruti Udyog Limited when the Government of India founded it in 1981.
It came to be known as what we see today when the Suzuki Motor Corporation took it over in 2003.
The brand has been manufacturing top-performing low- to mid-budget cars in India such as Maruti Suzuki WagonR, Maruti Suzuki Swift Dzire, and Maruti Suzuki Baleno.

The Baleno comes with a petrol or a diesel engine, with petrol engines being their specialty.

The Maruti Baleno’s price has been hiked by Rs. 20,000 to move it into the premium hatchback range. Features included in the latest update such as automatic climate control allows the driver to focus on the road instead of manually setting the AC temperature inside the cabin. With the addition of ISOFIX child seat anchors, the Baleno offers better safety for kids below the age of 10 years. The new cabin is more spacious and also comes with beautifully designed interiors.
The car is available in four trims, namely Alpha, Zeta, Delta, and Sigma. These trims are further divided into a total of eight variants since they are all available with both automatic and manual transmission options.
The mid-spec Zeta and Delta variants come with the Dualjet motor as well. Each variant comes with the Smart Hybrid Technology that enhances the driving experience. Maruti Baleno is available in six premium metallic colors. With the ‘liquid flow’ design language, engineers have left the car’s body mass as low as possible by incorporating high-tensile steel into the structure. The cabin and luggage space are massive, making the Baleno an ideal family car. There has been no compromise on interior quality with autoplay, clime control, and safety features.
The lowest costing variant is the Sigma, which is priced at Rs. 5.98 lakh, while the highest-priced one is the top-spec Alpha CVT, which is sold at Rs. 9.30 lakh. Maruti Baleno’s top rivals include Volkswagen Polo, Hyundai i20, Toyota Glanza, Honda Jazz, and Tata Altroz for the diesel engine. However, the petrol engine has no close rival.

The LED projector lamps from the Delta variant upwards offer superior visibility compared to the bi-xenon or halogen units in the Sigma variant or other lower-range cars by the company.

Pickup performance is highly competitive - fuel efficiency is not a problem.
339L luggage space is ideal for small to midsize family road trips.
The low-speed ride is a little stiff.
Interior design is not rear passenger-centric with no rear AC vents and armrests.

Maruti Suzuki is an expert at producing premium quality yet affordable cars, and the Maruti Suzuki Baleno is no exception. The car has cabin space that can rival sedans such as the Tata Indigo eCS. With powerful engine and transmission options along with superior fuel efficiency, the Baleno is on its way to break the Hyundai i20’s monopoly in the hatchback segment.
The petrol engine offers good pickup and can sprint for 20-80kmph within 6-8 seconds. It can also reach 100kmph within the 12-14 seconds range owing to its weight. This is an upgrade from the Tata Altroz that takes about 15 seconds to reach 100kmph and the Volkswagen Polo that takes 13-16 seconds.
This is the car for you if you are a keen driver who appreciates a smooth ride and gearbox. The steering offers a good response and is ideal for difficult traffic conditions. This is a stress-free car to use, especially in terms of ride comfort and overall performance.
However, you might feel some shakiness at the back owing to the low car weight. The suspension might feel a thumping at huge bumps, however, without causing discomfort. Volkswagen Polo might be a better ride for the rear passenger due to its excellent suspension and stability.
Overall, the Maruti Baleno is a winner with fantastic driving performance, comfort, and steering handling. However, if you are looking for a car for backseat comfort, you can check out some of its competitors, such as the Hyundai Elite i20 or Volkswagen Polo.
With its budget pricing and feature-packed panel and cabin, the Baleno becomes one of India’s most affordable premium hatchbacks. It is an ideal buy for people looking to upgrade from lower-segment hatchbacks such as the Swift or for midsize families.
