Hyundai, Genesis, and Kia have collectively recalled over 2,00,000 electric cars in the USA, as per the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). This recall has been issued due to a potential issue with the cars’s Integrated Charging Control Unit (ICCU).
ICCU is a component that is responsible for charging a 12-volt auxiliary battery onboard the South Korean carmakers’ EVs. It manages high and low-voltage currents and also charges the low-voltage battery. Failure of the ICCU can cause the 12-volt battery to not get charged, resulting in potentially dangerous situations on the road, such as the car suddenly stalling.
Units of the Hyundai Ioniq 5, Hyundai Ioniq 6, Genesis GV60, Genesis GV70 Electrified, and Genesis G80 manufactured between 2023-2025 have been affected by this latest recall. Units of the Kia EV6 manufactured between 2022-2025 also stand affected.
Earlier this year, Hyundai and Kia had together issued a recall for 1,47,100 electric vehicles over an issue pertaining to the same fault. You can read more about this here.
This recall isn’t just restricted to the States. Certain units of the Hyundai Ioniq 5 and Kia EV6 have also been recalled in India due to the same potential issue. You can read more about this recall here and check if your EV is included in the recall or not.
Customers of the affected cars shall be contacted by their respective manufacturers for an inspection and if the need arises, a replacement of the defected component. Owners can also contact their nearest dealership or enter their car’s VIN number into the NHTSA website to check if their car is a part of the recall.
For cars recalled in India, Kia India or Hyundai India should reach out to the owners in order to carry out an inspection followed by a software update or a replacement of the component. Alternatively, owners can also contact their nearest dealer or the brand’s customer care helpline in order to get the issue resolved.
