The Grand Vitara is Maruti’s rebadged version of the Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder. It is the first product in India that has been jointly developed by Suzuki and Toyota as part of their global alliance. Some of the popular compact SUVs that it competes with are Hyundai Creta, Honda Elevate, and Tata Harrier.
The Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara is presently offered with three powertrain options — a 1.5-litre petrol engine, a 1.5-litre petrol engine with a factory-fitted CNG kit, and a Toyota-sourced 1.5-litre strong hybrid petrol engine.
As per a media report by V3 Cars, Maruti Suzuki is developing a turbocharged version of its 1.2-litre Z-series petrol engine that debuted on the 2024 Maruti Swift. This would take the count of Maruti’s turbocharged engines in India to two, adding to the 1.0-litre Boosterjet that does duty on the Fronx Turbo.
This new 1.2-litre turbo-petrol unit could potentially replace the 1.5-litre K-series engine on cars such as the Grand Vitara, offering more power than the current NA unit. City driveability would also likely see an improvement as three-cylinder turbocharged engines generally tend to be more eager at lower RPMs with their superior torque delivery.
Maruti Suzuki India Limited is yet to comment on this report and hasn’t released any details about the development of any such powertrain to the public.
Currently, the Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara price starts at Rs 10.99 lakh for the petrol variants, Rs 13.15 lakh for the CNG variants, and Rs 18.43 lakh for the strong hybrid variants. The top-end hybrid Alpha+ variant is priced at Rs 19.93 lakh. All prices mentioned are ex-showroom, Delhi.
