The Mitsubishi Pajero is officially making a comeback. Five years after being discontinued globally, one of the world's most iconic off-road SUVs is set to return in an all-new avatar in late 2026. For those wondering, this isn't just another SUV launch but the revival of a nameplate that defined adventure for decades.
Unlike many modern SUVs that have moved towards monocoque construction, the new Pajero will be based on the rugged ladder-frame chassis of the Mitsubishi Triton pickup. The promise? Serious off-road capability combined with improved ride comfort and refinement.
The Pajero isn't just famous but it is legendary. Since its debut in 1982, Mitsubishi has sold over 3.25 million units across more than 170 countries. It also dominated the Dakar Rally and won the gruelling event 12 times, including seven consecutive victories.
While it will share its underpinnings with the Triton, Mitsubishi says the Pajero will get a completely different cabin and suspension setup. Expect a more premium interior, advanced technology, improved comfort, and flagship-level positioning within Mitsubishi's global lineup.
Official details remain under wraps, but the most likely option is Mitsubishi's 2.4-litre twin-turbo diesel engine producing 201hp and 470Nm. Some markets could also receive petrol and plug-in hybrid versions as Mitsubishi expands its electrified portfolio.
Unfortunately, don't get your hopes up just yet. While the Pajero enjoys cult status in India, Mitsubishi itself exited the market in 2020. Unless the brand officially returns, the chances of the new Pajero launching here remain slim. That said, if Mitsubishi does make a comeback, the Pajero could emerge as a niche but compelling rival to the Toyota Fortuner.
