Fuel pumps around Delhi have been directed to refuse fuel to end-of-life vehicles, which include diesel vehicles that are over 10 years old, and petrol vehicles that are over 15 years old.
The National Green Tribunal, back in 2015, passed a directive to ban the use of 10+ years old diesel cars and 15+ years old petrol cars in the Delhi-NCR region.
In 2018, the Supreme Court of India also passed the order to ban the plying and parking of such vehicles in public places around the National Capital Region.
While the law has been in place for a few years now, the enforcement of the same has been made stricter and more aggressive with this latest fuel ban.
The concerned authorities have deployed personnel from the Delhi Police as well as the traffic police at hundreds of fuel stations across Delhi, along with AI cameras, to detect any end-of-life vehicles and prevent them from getting refueled.
Certain companies, individuals, and politicians have supported this move, saying that it is a good step towards reducing pollution in the Capital, which worsens in the coming winter months.
Others have voiced against the ban, saying that it is ineffective towards having a significant effect on reducing pollution, and has rather been put into place for the benefit of automakers and other corporations, putting financial stress on the general public.
