The Renault Megane EV was recently seen on the streets of Chennai with green TN registration plates, indicating its all-electric nature. This appearance, without camouflage, suggests internal testing or executive use, reigniting speculation around its potential Indian debut.
The Megane EV was first unveiled globally in 2021 and was considered for India as a CBU (Completely Built-Up) unit. Renault even flew Indian media to Europe to showcase it. However, the plans were shelved.
Renault has a track record of using its global models like the Koleos, Arkana, and Megane EV for testing or executive movement. But with India's new EV import policy that allows limited imports in exchange for major investment, Renault may be reevaluating its EV strategy—though it's too early to confirm anything.
While the Megane EV’s fate is uncertain, Renault is already testing the Dacia Spring EV (Kwid EV) in India under heavy camouflage. A Duster-based EV is also in the pipeline, indicating Renault’s growing EV ambitions for the Indian market.
The Megane EV features a 60kWh battery, powering a front-mounted motor producing 220PS and 300Nm. It offers a claimed range of 458km and supports bi-directional 11kW AC charging, with an optional 22kW fast AC charger—putting it in the same league as the Hyundai Creta EV, Tata Curvv EV, and MG Windsor EV Pro.
