Tesla is all set to make its long-awaited debut in India next month with the launch of its first car — the Model Y. The carmaker will import the EV via the CBU route, with units sourced directly from Giga Shanghai factory in China.
The Tesla Model Y is expected to launch in India with a rear-wheel-drive (RWD) configuration. In its international-spec version, the Model Y range is claimed to be 593 km on 19-inch wheels and 559 km on the larger 20-inch wheels. On the performance front, it accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in just 5.9 seconds.
According to Bloomberg, the first set of Tesla Model Y units has been imported into Mumbai. Alongside the vehicles, Tesla has also shipped Supercharger components, car accessories, branded merchandise, and spare parts — sourced from the US, China, and the Netherlands.
Furthermore, according to Bloomberg, five Tesla Model Y units have been imported into Mumbai. As per documents reviewed by the publication, the units were declared at Rs 2.77 million (approximately $31,988) and drew over Rs 2.1 million in import duties.
Going by the reviewed documents and heavy import tariffs, the Tesla Model Y is estimated to cost over $56,000 before taxes and insurance — roughly Rs 48 lakh. That makes it far from a budget-friendly option for most buyers.
The Tesla Model Y India launch is anticipated to take place in mid-July. Around the same time, Tesla is set to open its first showroom in Mumbai, with a second outlet expected to follow soon after in Delhi.
