BMW has officially begun work on the highly anticipated fifth-generation X5 SUV, which is set to make its global debut in 2026. Internally, the new X5 is codenamed G65, while the performance-oriented X5 M version is being referred to as G95. This new iteration promises exciting changes in design, powertrain, and technology.
One of the standout features of the upcoming X5 will be its adoption of BMW's Neue Klasse design language. Spy shots reveal the front of the SUV sporting X-shaped daytime running lights, paired with sleek, wraparound headlamp housings, giving it a more futuristic appearance.
The X5’s sporty look is enhanced with a large central air intake on the front bumper and several circular vents, contributing to its aggressive stance. Its flared wheel arches add to the rugged, powerful look, while the rear of the vehicle, inspired by the BMW XM SUV, features quad exhaust tips.
The upcoming X5 will be larger in every dimension – longer, wider, and heavier – than the current model.
Inside, the new X5 will draw heavily from the Neue Klasse design theme, focusing on simplicity and sophistication. Expect a minimalist dashboard featuring a large floating touchscreen, complemented by a full-width curved head-up display (HUD), offering a tech-forward and streamlined driving experience.
BMW will offer a wide range of powertrain options for the new X5. Alongside the traditional petrol and diesel engines, there will be plug-in hybrid variants, with the full-electric iX5 also joining the lineup.
One of the most exciting models in the range will be the X5 M60e xDrive. This plug-in hybrid will feature a 3.0-litre twin-turbo six-cylinder petrol engine, combined with an electric motor and a lithium-ion battery, delivering a total of around 570hp.
Though the launch of the new X5 is still a couple of years away, it is expected to make its global debut sometime in 2026, with sales beginning in most markets by early 2027.
