The Volkswagen Golf GTI Edition 50 set a new record at the Nürburgring with a lap time of 7 minutes and 46 seconds, becoming the fastest Volkswagen model around the track—surpassing the all-wheel-drive Golf R despite being front-wheel drive.
The record-setting car was equipped with an optional Performance Pack, which includes: A performance chassis and specially developed 19-inch semi-slick Potenza Race tyres from Bridgestone. This setup significantly enhanced the GTI’s handling and grip.
Volkswagen test driver Benny Leuchter praised the GTI's performance, noting that he didn’t expect a front-wheel-drive GTI to outpace the Golf R—especially in poor weather conditions—highlighting the car’s setup and potential.
The Golf GTI Edition 50 will officially launch in 2026 to mark 50 years of the GTI. However, it will be publicly showcased on June 20, 2025, ahead of the Nürburgring 24-hour race.
Volkswagen recently launched the Golf GTI in India at Rs 53 lakh. The first batch of 150 units sold out quickly, and an additional 100 units are planned later in the year. However, the Edition 50 is unlikely to launch in India due to limited global availability.
