In the year 1998 a young and promising automobile firm, San Motors India Limited, introduced their first vehicle in India in the form of San Storm. A two-seater Roadster, San Storm was designed by the well-known French design firm, Le Mans Group. The San Storm was a convertible coupe car that was launched keeping in mind sports car enthusiasts in the country. It was an attempt to lure those sports car buyers who crave for a sports car but due to its high price tag cannot afford to buy them. The sole car model produced by San Motors was powered by a Renault sourced engine. Though the operations of the company ceased in 2013, you can still find a handful of second hand San cars or used San cars in India.
Quick Facts About San Motors
- San Motors started operations in 1998.
- The San Storm convertible was supposed to be imported to the UK in the early 2000s but the deal between San Motors and Reliant motor company of the UK never matured.
- San Motors did succeed in importing the Storms to the UK market and sold via Dream Machines, a local automotive company based out of Heathfield, East Sussex.
- The only car of San Motors – the San Storm – was an amalgamation of parts borrowed from most cars of its era. These cars include Ford Ikon, Fiat Uno, Maruti Suzuki Esteem, Opel Astra, Fiat Palio, and many others.
- It was priced at Rs 5.75 Lakh (ex-showroom, Mumbai), which seemed to be too aggressive for a convertible at that point of time.
- However, low-quality parts, the dearth of dealerships and no brand value made things troublesome for the brand and there were only a handful of takers of the vehicle at that price point.
- The San Storm was assembled at Bangalore whereas the Renault-sourced 1.2-liter engine was incorporated in Goa.
San Motors - Resale Value
Since the car brand is no more operational, the resale value of pre-owned San cars has gone down considerably. That is the reason why people who want to sell used San cars are not getting the right value for their cars. However, it is a fact that it was India’s only auto brand which launched a convertible vehicle at such an aggressive price. But, ultimately, it was the build quality and the performance of the vehicle that ripped off the expectation of its owners and, simultaneously, the reputation of San Motors brand in the country. The owners of the San Storm started to sell pre-owned San cars after a brief period of use but due to its poor market reputation, there were limited buyers who showed interest in buying them. It became a nightmare to sell second-hand cars in that period.
