Know More

In the year 1998 a young and promising automobile firm, San Motors India Limited, introduced their first vehicle in India in the form of San Storm.  A two-seater Roadster, San Storm was designed by the well-known French design firm, Le Mans Group. The San Storm was a convertible coupe car that was launched keeping in mind sports car enthusiasts in the country. It was an attempt to lure those sports car buyers who crave for a sports car but due to its high price tag cannot afford to buy them. The sole car model produced by San Motors was powered by a Renault sourced engine. Though the operations of the company ceased in 2013, you can still find a handful of second hand San cars or used San cars in India.

Quick Facts About San Motors

  • San Motors started operations in 1998.
  • The San Storm convertible was supposed to be imported to the UK in the early 2000s but the deal between San Motors and Reliant motor company of the UK never matured.
  • San Motors did succeed in importing the Storms to the UK market and sold via Dream Machines, a local automotive company based out of Heathfield, East Sussex.
  • The only car of San Motors – the San Storm – was an amalgamation of parts borrowed from most cars of its era. These cars include Ford Ikon, Fiat Uno, Maruti Suzuki Esteem, Opel Astra, Fiat Palio, and many others.
  • It was priced at Rs 5.75 Lakh (ex-showroom, Mumbai), which seemed to be too aggressive for a convertible at that point of time.
  • However, low-quality parts, the dearth of dealerships and no brand value made things troublesome for the brand and there were only a handful of takers of the vehicle at that price point.
  • The San Storm was assembled at Bangalore whereas the Renault-sourced 1.2-liter engine was incorporated in Goa.

San Motors - Resale Value

Since the car brand is no more operational, the resale value of pre-owned San cars has gone down considerably. That is the reason why people who want to sell used San cars are not getting the right value for their cars. However, it is a fact that it was India’s only auto brand which launched a convertible vehicle at such an aggressive price. But, ultimately, it was the build quality and the performance of the vehicle that ripped off the expectation of its owners and, simultaneously, the reputation of San Motors brand in the country. The owners of the San Storm started to sell pre-owned San cars after a brief period of use but due to its poor market reputation, there were limited buyers who showed interest in buying them. It became a nightmare to sell second-hand cars in that period.

Nevertheless, now you have the privilege of car buying platforms like CARS24 who buys cars almost instantly with money getting transferred in your account in a single day. With respect to RC transfer and other documentation too, CARS24 takes complete responsibility and gets the work done in a hassle-free manner. As the brand no more exists hence neither there is new San cars showroom nor used San cars showroom in the country. So, now you can come to us, get your used SAN cars valuation done and sell second hand San cars to CARS24.

Current San Motors Cars in India - Listing of San Motors cars

Since San Motors stopped its operations in the country in the year 2013, there are no new models on sale. If you wish to own a San vehicle, you will be able to buy only an old San car. Below are the details of the company’s only car model.
San Storm by San Motors - The two-seater convertible coupe car was packed with a Renault sourced 1.2 L, 1149cc, D7F fuel injected, overhead camshaft 4-cylinder, in-line petrol engine that was capable of producing a maximum power of 58 bhp at 5250 rpm together with a peak torque value of 90 Nm at 4000 rpm. With this engine, which was mated to a 5-speed manual transmission gearbox, the Roadster claimed to attain a top speed of 141 kmph. The body structure of the car had fiberglass-reinforced tubular steel body and chassis. With its light body weight of 760 kg, it managed a decent power-to-weight ratio.

Due to its lightweight, it was able to attain the 100 km/h mark from a standstill in nearly 13 seconds. San Storm was said to deliver a certified fuel efficiency of approx 13-15 kmpl under standard road conditions. The convertible coupe car received a fuel tank capacity of 35 liters. The San Storm was made available in as many as five colors namely Viper Red, Mellow Yellow, Star Silver, Nightfire Red, and Magic Black. Prior to the discontinuation, the San Storm was priced at Rs 5.75 Lakh, ex-showroom Mumbai.

San Motors History

San Motors India Limited started its operation in the year 1998. The vision of the India-bound automobile firm was to develop cars that widely displayed exclusivity and distinctiveness alongside showcase Indian engineering and creative excellence at its best. San Motors’ state of the art manufacturing facility was located at Bangalore where the body and chassis were made, while the bodywork and assembling were done in Goa unit.

Besides sourcing the engine from Renault, a France based design firm, Le Mans Group, was given the responsibility for the overall designing of the car. The team of San Motors comprised of latest machinery and testing equipment, seasoned management team, skilled workforce, and a dynamic marketing and distribution network.

San Motors – What Makes It Unique?

The best part of the Bangalore based car maker was sheer determination and commitment to giving India and the world an affordable desi sports car. The automobile firm’s idea was not only restricted to the domestic circuit but was also to export the two-seater San Storm to many countries worldwide including the United Kingdom (UK).

San Motors in association with Reliant Motor Company, UK had plans to sell light vehicles such as San Storm, its convertible version and others in the UK automotive market. However, the plans of import never took off. Moreover, the convertible version of the Storm was once imported by Dream Machines, a company based in Heathfield - East Sussex, UK.
The mid-size car from San Motors was adorned with many convenience and safety features that include power windows, power steering, air-conditioner, child safety locks, front fog lights, rear defroster, leather upholstery, etc.

Sell Used San Motors Cars In India

Started in the year 1998 and defunct in 2003, San Motors had a short journey in the Indian automobile sector. Despite no brand value, but due to the hype of ‘Indian’ sports car by San Motors, the San Storm convertible car was able to sell a handful of units in the Mumbai city. Moreover, due to the long list of issues with the car in terms of mechanical and fit finish, the San Storm soon became obsolete. Due to various niggles in the Storm, its owners started to sell old San car, but as the company was shut down, there were no buyers for the same. Nevertheless, if you own a Storm, you can now sell it to CARS24.

Still Confused? Take the Right Decision

Exchange offer. A bad idea!

Well, let us burst this bubble. This will never happen. Do you know what actually happens in an Exchange offer? Let us explain it to you.

There is a negotiation on the value of your used car. The sales executive will smartly offer you a higher price than what CARS24 is offering for your used car. This is the salesman’s way of gaining your trust by making you believe you got an amazing deal for your used car. This is a trap! What the salesman has done is that while negotiating a deal for the new car, he will give you significantly less discount than what he could have actually offered. Why don’t you test it out yourself?

Go to a new car dealership to buy a car. Separately, send a friend/family member to buy a new car in exchange of their used car. You would learn that the extra money offered for your used car would mean a smaller discount on your new car. Who will bear the loss for this? Definitely you!

Instead, get the best price for your used car on CARS24 and negotiate hard when you purchase a new car.

Selling on classified websites? Don't

First, let us tell you how CARS24 gets you the best price: we have long term, volume contracts with OEMs, corporates, leasing companies, car rental companies, etc who want your car to grow their business. That is how we get you the best price for your car.

So you don't need to look anywhere else. However let's still address your other options. Classified websites are likely to show much higher prices for your car. Honestly, they are arbitrary - almost 50% - 200% higher than the real value! We don't know why they are so poor with their 'price calculators' but trust us, you will know that as soon as you start the process of meeting buyers for your car.

Got a good deal? Check ours.

You could go ahead and sell your car directly to a consumer but do you know it could take months before you actually complete the transaction? Do you have months to spare & time to meet hundreds of individual buyers to find that one perfect buyer for your used car?

By waiting longer you lose more than you gain as your car value depreciates every day you wait. Moreover, transferring the ownership & shifting the liability of your used car over to the new customer could be a very tedious job.
Once you’ve handed over the keys to the new owner of the car, how long will you chase him for the transfer of ownership documents? Obviously you wouldn’t want your used car to land in the wrong hands and this liability is yours.

At CARS24, we guarantee a transparent process where we will get you the best price for your used car, as well as take care of all paperwork, including the transfer of ownership too! The best part being that from the moment you hand over the keys to us, we take full ownership & all liability of the car lies with us!

Found an end buyer? Wait!

When you are planning to buy a new car, waiting longer can help in getting you a better price for it. But this is the exact opposite, when you are trying to sell your existing car.

Even if your existing car has done 0km & maintained impeccably, it’s still losing value every day. Moreover, there are few events like Mega discounts on new cars, Year change, New model launch, that further drop the value of your current car.

Hypothetically, if Honda City announces a new facelift, the existing design might reduce value by 20%. This is fairly common in the car industry. Similarly with year change, you lose 10-20% value. So if you have made up your mind to sell your car, every minute you delay you are losing real cash. Now, go ahead and sell your car to CARS24 and get the best price possible in the market!
