In 1933, a small independent family business in the Czech Republic started manufacturing ‘Octavia’ under Škoda’s portfolio of cars. The word ‘Octavia’ coincidently means ‘eighth’ in Latin, which was then the eighth model under Škoda’s brand.
The first Octavia came into production in January 1959 by AZNP, a Czech automaker. In April 1996, the first-generation SUV model succeeded the original Octavia produced in 1933. There have been 4 generations to Octavia since its production in 1996.
Octavia is by far the most popular model among all generations and Škoda has sold around 6.5 million cars to date. Since the early 1990s, Škoda has built a reputation for being the most dynamic sedan of all time. There are currently 2 trims (variants) in the 4th generation of Octavia models; Style and Laurin & Klement.
Octavia comes with a 2-litre (1984 cc) BS6 compliant turbo-petrol engine. The engine is quite refined and produces a maximum power of 187.74 BHP and throttles at a torque of 2500 Nm. This thrilling torque is achieved due to its smooth and capable engine. Both trims offer automatic transmission via 7-speed DSG (dual-clutch). These variants deliver 15.81 km/l ARAI, which is economical.
Octavia is built on the Volkswagen Group MQB A0 1N platform. Design-wise, it has a sporty build with clean creases and a dynamic design. Besides its design, it also offers advanced safety features like front and rear parking sensors, rear seat belts, eight airbags, electronic stability control, hill hold control and many more.
This family-friendly 5-seater sedan is also equipped with smart specifications like a 10-inch touchscreen infotainment system, adaptive LED headlamps, self-powered tailgate, tyre pressure monitoring, dual-zone climate control, and wireless charging.

Škoda, a nationalised Czech automaker, has been a well-known name in the executive segment of cars for 6 decades. Since 2002, Škoda’s Octavia has been one of the most popular models in the Indian sedan market. Octavia’s clever features make it the most lovable car in the D-segment (mid-size executive) of cars. The Czech car manufacturer has been producing different improved derivatives of Octavia since the end of 1996, and they gave the latest update to the sedan in mid-2021. Looks-wise, this sedan is tough, practical and has a luxurious build. The sedan has a load of unique features, so let’s have a quick look at them.
Škoda’s Octavia comes with a 10-inch infotainment system, expandable boot space, marvellous canton sound system, power steering and much more. The family sedan also has irresistible safety features like an anti-lock braking system (ABS), airbags and an electric child safety lock, among other impressive features. The sedan is priced between 26-29 lacs currently and is offered in 5 vibrant colours like Candy White, Brilliant Silver, Maple Brown, Lava Blue, and Magic Black.
Octavia’s latest upgrade is a 2.0 TSI (turbocharged) engine with a 7-speed DSG transmission. It is an improved version from its predecessor - Škoda Superb - a 3rd generation Octavia model. The 4th generation of Octavia is available in a wide range of derivatives, namely; Škoda Octavia Sportline, Škoda Octavia Combi Sportline, Škoda Octavia G-Tec, Škoda Octavia Combi G-Tec, Škoda Octavia Scout, Škoda Octavia RS, Škoda Octavia Combi RS, Škoda Octavia iV and Škoda Octavia Combi iV. The sedan’s rivals include Hyundai Elantra, Hyundai Tuscan, Jeep Compass, Citroën C5 Aircross and Volkswagen T-Roc.

In some circumstances, Octavia’s refined TSI engine can handle torque up to 4000 rpm.
Besides its engine, the overall ride with Octavia is surprisingly comfortable due to its long travel and smooth suspension.
It possesses clever interiors; from a sculpted backseat recliner to electronic communication, the car exudes European comfort and class to the fullest.
The new sharp grille, sensor-controlled tailgate and twin L-shaped DRL pattern make Octavia’s body panel a luxurious choice.
Being an executive sedan, it is amazingly spacious for both front and rear-seat passengers.
In comparison to older Octavia models (2nd and 3rd generation), the current (4th generation) offers more legroom and headroom despite its sloping roof.
Both Octavia variants (trims) have a massive 600 litres boot space, making it a practical choice for bigger families. Interestingly, no other sedan in the D- segment has scalable boot space of up to 1555 litres. This translates to ample space for all kinds of luggage.
Pricing is expensive for being in an executive segment of cars.
Škoda missed out on some vital features like a sunroof and ventilated seats.
Škoda could have offered 18-inch alloy wheels to both variants instead of 17 inches.
There is a lack of crucial safety features like AEB (autonomous emergency braking) and lane parking assistance.
Unfortunately, there are no diesel variants available in this model.
Octavia is the epitome of reliability. After a quick comparison with other sedans like Hyundai Elantra and Volkswagen T-Roc in the same segment, Škoda’s Octavia tops the chart. All car experts have a unanimous say on Octavia - it is smart, classy and luxurious. It has an advantage over other carmakers because of its clever details, unmatchable torque, spacious compartments, stylish body panel and last but not least, a highly creative boot. All of the above justifies the price tag of an Octavia Style or Octavia Laurin & Klement.
But, on the other hand, the pricing of Octavia is a bit steep. One might favour other sedans in the same segment, which are more affordable than Škoda’s Octavia. So, opt for Octavia if your inclination is more towards comfort and spaciousness above everything else. Once you hop in the car, the back-friendly AGR certified seats will ease the surrounding aura, and all the interiors and exterior features will electronically communicate to you. Besides comfort, all car enthusiasts would enjoy riding this family-friendly sedan because it offers a steady and reliable ride on Indian roads.
Octavia offers plenty of safety features as compared to an Elantra or T-Roc. Octavia is packed with a total of 8 (front and rear) airbags, an efficient braking system (Anti Lock Braking System), and effortless cruise control (ESC). Moreover, this sedan has brilliant advanced features such as MKB (Multi Collision Brake), Anti Theft Alarm, Curtain airbags, Crash sensor and a cut-off of fuel supply in any emergencies. To sum up, Octavia is undoubtedly the most reliable buy in terms of design, space, mileage and safety.
