In 2002, Tata launched the first generation of Indigo cars in the market. It was based on the Tata Indica.
By 2008, the Indigo ECS had made its way to every Indian household.
It was a crossover between a sedan and a hatchback. However, it was industrially referred to as a sedan.

Tata Indigo ECS was the pioneer of sub-4m compact sedans in India. The model was offered to the customers with benefits of more than Rs 50,000 by the company in April 2016 before it was discontinued. Ten manual CNG, petrol, and diesel variants of the model were available for buyers. It included Emax CNG GLS, LS (TDI) BS III, GLS, Emax CNG GLX, LX (TDI) BS III, eGVX, LS, eVX, LX, and GLX. Indigo ECS was offered in four different colours: Jet Silver, Spanish Tan, Porcelain White, and Spanish Tan. Some of these colours were only available in specific versions.
Tata packed the car with features like central locking, remote boot, keyless entry, and a fuel lid opener. Besides this, some of the other notable features of this model were dual chamber headlamps, power windows, AC, rear fog lamps, and tachometers. The car also came with internally adjustable outside rear-view mirrors and child safety locks on the rear doors.
Tata retailed Indigo ECS from ? 5.13 Lakh to ? 6.45 Lakh. The petrol variant of the car was sold from ? 5.13 Lakh - ? 5.50 Lakh. However, the diesel variant was priced between? 5.90 Lakh - ? 6.45 Lakh.
During the period it was available in the market, Tata’s Indigo ECS competed with Ford Aspire, Hyundai Aura, Tata Tigor, Ford Figo, Maruti Suzuki Dzire, Ford Aspire, Maruti Suzuki Baleno, Honda Amaze, Maruti Suzuki Swift, and Maruti Suzuki Ignis because of its prices, shortage of features, and ageing designs.
Indigo ECS had acquired a good rating for fuel efficiency. It was well known in the industry and across the country for keeping the wallet of customers happy. Additionally, the model was beneficial for long journeys.
